At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students. Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

Job Summary

The Equity & Inclusion Office (EIO) is committed to ensuring that UBC is a community in which human rights are respected and equity and inclusion are integral to university life. Through its leadership, vision, and collaborative action, the Equity & Inclusion Office will further UBC’s commitment to excellence, equity, and mutual respect.

Through a range of actions including one-on-one consultations, educational delivery, program assessments, the Equity and Inclusion Strategist provides expertise and leadership to shift attitudes and behaviours and systemic organizational change strategies that embed justice, equity, inclusion, decolonization, and Indigenization into procedures and policies (for example, inclusive pedagogical practices, trainee supervision, well-being, inclusive research, equitable staff, and faculty review and hiring).

To support the implementation of university-wide strategic priorities outlined in the UBC Strategic Plan, the Inclusion Action Plan, and the Indigenous Strategic Plan, this position works in partnership with academic units and non-academic units and relevant groups and initiatives across campus.

Organizational Status

The Strategist is located in the Equity & Inclusion Office (EIO) and reports to the Director, Strategic Partnerships & Capacity Building.

The Strategist works collaboratively with UBC departments, faculties, and other units on campus as a member of a team of professionals, actively participating in, and contributing to the development and implementation of relevant plans. For projects related to the Indigenous Strategic Plan, the Strategist will work in collaboration with Indigenous support units across the university.

The Strategist will also work in partnership arrangements with selected units across the university. The length and intensity of these partnerships (eg. 2 months to several years) and the selection of the partnering units will depend on the operational needs of the partnering unit, staffing considerations within the EIO, and the skills and qualifications of the strategist. Within these partnerships, Strategist works primarily with the University administrative heads, faculty, and staff in order to promote equity and inclusion for equity-deserving members of our community.

This is a fast-paced, dynamic, high-performance team environment with excellent opportunities for skill development and growth.

The incumbent will initially work in a hybrid work environment (1-3 days a week on campus) but may in the future transition to more days in-person on campus (UBC-V or UBC-O). Some evening and weekend work may be required.

Work Performed

Education and Systemic Change

- Develops, facilitates, and evaluates Train-the-Trainer models with various units across campus; works collaboratively with the units to coordinate and support new trainers within their unit to enhance the capacity and sustainability of these educational initiatives across UBC.
- Provides evidence-based consultation for faculty and staff and secondarily for students on topics related to equity, inclusion, decolonization, Indigenization, and human rights in order to develop and implement organizational change strategies that embed equity and inclusion within policies, practices, and behaviours in the learning, living and working environment across campus.
