Position Summary:
Reporting to the Associate Director, Content and Publications, the Communications Officer will be responsible for the creation of a wide range of University Advancement (UA) communications and marketing materials across many platforms to support McGill’s fundraising initiatives and to keep alumni, donors, and friends closely connected and well-informed about the University. This position will focus on, but will not be limited to, communications related to UA’s Annual Giving program. The work will help McGill to engage its global alumni community and convey the impact of philanthropy to a wide range of audiences through fundraising communications, website content, advertising, brochures and other print materials, e-newsletters, articles, video and social media content across UA communications platforms.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Create written and online communication materials designed to promote McGill’s Annual Giving programs among alumni and donors, including fundraising communications, advertising and promotional materials, digital content, and e-broadcast content for target demographic groups.- Work in collaboration with fundraisers, communications professionals, professors and academic staff, students and other stakeholders across the University to craft messages and hone strategies aimed at improving McGill’s relationship and fundraising success with a wide variety of existing and prospective donors.- Act as a point-person with UA Creative Services, Digital and Content teams for Annual Giving communications; work in collaboration with the UA Project Management team to liaise with annual giving staff on annual giving projects.- Create communications in support of the McGill Giving website, McGill Crowdfunding website, McGill24, and other targeted programs, campaigns and platforms.- Work with colleagues to make best use of social media and other emerging technologies to expand McGill’s reach among the alumni and donor communities.- Act as a specialist in Annual Giving communications contributing to the development of creative communications strategies that will help achieve maximum impact with an efficient use of resources; benchmark Annual Giving communications strategies and materials against other universities and organizations and keep current with best practices.- Write speaking notes for UA events for senior McGill administration (including the Vice-Principal, the Chancellor and the Principal and other university leaders and volunteers as required), ensuring consistency in messaging and alignment with University priorities.- Participate in the creation of other UA communications including but not limited to publications and articles, press releases, volunteer materials, alumni programs promotion, Advancement events communications and promotion.- Assist with review of Communications content in translation (French), with the ability to provide editing, proofreading/copyediting support.- Undertake special UA communications projects and perform other communications support duties as required.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Outstanding writing skills with the flexibility and creativity to create copy to address a wide range of audiences. A demonstrated ability to create high-impact communications materials across a wide spectrum of topics. Proven ability to write and edit communications materials for a variety of platforms (print and digital). Excellent spoken and written English, as well as spoken French and written French skills in order to review content in translation.

Fluency in social media and other emerging communications platforms. Experience developing communications materials using web content management systems considered an asset. The capacity to liaise with internal and external clients and to work autonomously and as part of a team in a fast-paced, changing, deadline-oriented environment. Proven talent for problem-solving.

Demonstrated organization skills, with the ability to set priorities and multi-task. The demonstrated ability to work in a PC environment using MS Office.

Education/Experience: Undergraduate Degree (Journalism, Communications, Digital Communications, English, History, or Liberal Arts preferred). Employment background in advancement communications, marketing communications or journalism is preferred.
