Legal Services Branch (LSB) is the Government of Manitoba’s full service in-house civil law office of about 55 lawyers. It provides a complete range of high quality legal services to all government departments, and to agencies, boards, commissions and corporations that do not have their own legal counsel.

LSB’s work enables the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Manitoba to fulfill the constitutional and statutory responsibility of Chief Legal Advisor to Government, and as the guardian of the public interest with respect to matters of civil law. This results in a varied work experience that is unique, challenging, and highly engaging.

LSB is currently seeking two (2) lawyers of varying experience and skill sets to join our team in a distinct area of LSB, its Aboriginal and Natural Resources Law Section.

Lawyers with experience and interest in various practice areas, including one or more of Aboriginal Law, Indigenous laws, constitutional law, child welfare law, contract negotiation, commercial law and drafting, privacy law, conflict of laws, environment law, resource law and public law, are sought to join an expanding practice group supporting this important transition.

Qualifications:
**Essential**:

- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D) degree with experience practising law in a common law jurisdiction
- Experience or exposure to any one or more of: Aboriginal Law; Indigenous laws; constitutional law; child welfare law; contract negotiation; commercial law and drafting; privacy law; conflict of laws; law related to natural resources and/or Crown lands; public law
- Experience interpreting and explaining statutes, regulations and/or policies
- Experience in developing strategy, and in providing legal advice and making recommendations
- Excellent analytical skills, including the ability to recognize and assess legal implications and policy options and ramifications
- Ability to provide legal advice on complex and high profile issues of law and policy, in a time-sensitive environment to meet conflicting deadlines
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Superior written communication skills
- Strong verbal communication and presentation skills
- Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively and constructively in a team environment
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain strong and positive working relationships, including with co-workers, clients and external interests

**Desired**:

- Knowledge of Indigenous histories, cultures and the importance of reconciliation
- Public law experience and/or knowledge of governmental operations
- Experience and proficiency with legal research software (such as CanLII, Westlaw and Quicklaw)
- Experience with Microsoft Office (including Word and Outlook)
- Proficiency in French
