**About Us**:
The Faculty of Information and Media Studies at Western University is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about media, communications, and information. We study technologies, systems, histories and practices to understand the role of media and information in democratic process and the social and cultural determinants of power and agency. Across our programs, we foster two key capacities in our students: the ability to think critically about the world in which we live, and the skill and confidence to make interventions in our communities and institutions.
**Responsibilities**:
The Indigenous Programs Coordinator develops and implements programming to enhance the recruitment, mentorship and support of Indigenous students, as well as programming that promotes knowledge and understanding of Indigenous peoples, history, law, media and culture among non-Indigenous students and faculty. Working with faculty, academic officers, and the Office of Indigenous Initiatives, the Indigenous Programs Coordinator supports projects aimed at reconciliation and the decolonization of pedagogies and scholarly research. In this important role, the Indigenous Programs Coordinator helps to build connections with local First Nations communities and organizations in furtherance of these goals.
**Qualifications**:
- Education:
- Undergraduate degree
- Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor Degree preferred
- Experience:
- 3 years' experience working with Indigenous peoples, communities, organizations, and/or youth
- Experience giving oral presentations, preferably in an educational setting
- Experience in a higher education setting is preferred
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Thorough understanding of Indigenous post-secondary student educational needs, policies, issues, and implications in Canada
- A deep understanding of local Indigenous communities, organizations, and cultural protocols and practices is an asset
- Strong understanding of Indigenous histories, traditions and cultures
- Knowledge of post-secondary programs, protocols and processes related to admissions with familiarity with Indigenous Student Services and Indigenous admission practices across the post-secondary sector
- Ability to work productively in a team environment
- Strong written and oral communication skills, preferably developed in an educational setting
- Proven ability to assess issues promptly, intervene and problem-solve to support a positive student experience
- Demonstrated strong student service orientation, to handle inquiries and resolve issues in a professional and timely manner, including the ability to understand when referral or escalation is required
- Ability to recruit and manage volunteers
- Proven ability to evaluate programs and implement necessary changes
- Highly developed cross-cultural knowledge and understanding of intercultural considerations
- Ability to assess the needs and expectations of multiple stakeholders and develop programming accordingly
- Relationship-management skills, including an ability to collaborate and communicate with diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders
- Strong sense of empathy and personal strength
- Willingness and ability to travel in Ontario and across Canada
- Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the faculties’ events and activities
