Within the Office of Indigenous Initiatives is the Indigenous Student Centre, committed to supporting Indigenous students in reaching their highest potential through a safe space, wholistic, culturally relevant and strength-based programs, and services that foster Indigenous presence and inclusion, increasing access and retention.

The priority areas for the Indigenous Student Centre are:

- Indigenous cultural enrichment
- Indigenous student academic and career support
- Indigenous youth and community outreach
- Indigenous orientation and transition
- Indigenization of the student experience
- Indigenous Student wholistic well being

**Responsibilities**:
Reporting to the Director of the Indigenous Student Centre, the Indigenous Counselor is a highly skilled professional responsible for supporting primarily (but not exclusively) Indigenous students at Western to address emotional, social, behavioral, and developmental concerns in a way that honors Indigenous knowledge, experience and healing. The incumbent will work collaboratively within the Office of Indigenous Initiatives and the Indigenous Student Centre, to assist students with well-being concerns and promote mental health by facilitating stress reduction, self-awareness, self-care, emotional regulation, and creative problem-solving.

**Key Accountabilities**
- Supports a wide range of concerns faced by Indigenous students, and offers support to assist with the resolution of emotional, social, behavioral and development concerns that may affect their academic success
- Gathers information from the clients’ perspective regarding the nature and degree of the problem to determine the appropriate support in a culturally appropriate manner.
- Provides counselling to students, in a confidential setting, to enhance their personal development and gives direction to available resources to further resolve issues.
- Maintains thorough and accurate case management notes and progress in accordance with professional standards, and University privacy policies.
- Assesses the strengths, needs, and resources of the client as well as their readiness for support and service.
- Works with clients to consider taking a new perspective in how they see and interact with their world and to make decisions and choices regarding possible ways forward through Indigenous practices of wellbeing.
- Provides information to clients regarding their rights and responsibilities, including limits to confidentiality
- Provides crisis support and safety planning when a student is at risk, including the possibility of suicide or other forms of self-harm (severe crises are addressed on the day that they present, and less severe crises within two to three days using judgement to ensure the most serious cases are managed expediently)
- Will provide support in person, on campus through the Indigenous Student Centre space, virtually through zoom, and over the phone dependent on the needs of the client. They may also provide offsite support if they have an off campus professional place of business.
- This role will support the planning and facilitation of wellness programming such as the Visiting Auntie/Uncle program, workshops and resources.
