**Accountability**: The Archives Outreach Assistant directly reports to the **Archivist**

**Summary**:
**Duties and Responsibilities**:
(Main functions but not limited to the following)

The student will research and create a brief biography of at least one of our former Archbishops to be uploaded to our website. This will include scans of documents and/or photographs from our collection related to his life and tenure as Archbishop of Halifax. Our first 5 Archbishops have already been profiled, so this project will continue that trajectory, creating a biography of the Most Rev. Cornelius O’Brien. Archbishop O’Brien was the first Canadian born Bishop of Halifax, and was instrumental in the establishment and support of many institutions that were foundational to the growth of Halifax and beyond with a particular interest in education. As such, a biography of this Bishop will be of interest to readers in the wider community.

If time permits, the student will also create biographical sketch of the Most Rev. Edward J. McCarthy, who was the Archbishop of Halifax during World War I. That alone makes his episcopacy one of interest to researchers.

In consultation with the Archivist and the Chancellor, the student will be encouraged to explore our holdings in order to created other content for the Archives webpage, drawing from items and material in our collection.

**Key Competencies**
- Possess above average attention to detail
- Ability to cope with tedium and repetitive tasks
- Ability to physically lift up to 50 lbs
- Fluency in English required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Possess a well-rounded knowledge of and respect for the teachings and structure of the Roman Catholic Church
- Must be able to read cursive writing.

**Qualifications**:

- Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
- Previous archival or library experience would be an asset
- Ability to work independently.
- Competency in word-processing, computer and data base function
- Demonstrated research, analytical, organizational and planning skills and the ability to prioritize and work well in a high-pressure, multi-task environment and as part of a team, with the ability to shift between and among different initiatives

**Note**:
Offer of employment is contingent on Canada Summer jobs funding approval and on upon the completion of all applicable background checks and confirmation of references and credentials, the results of which must be satisfactory to the employer.

The person who fills this position is required to consent to a Police Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check, and to sign an agreement to abide by the Responsible Ministry protocols of the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth.
