Job Description Summary

The Emerging Media Lab (EML) Supervisor oversees the day to day operation of EML incliding use and maintenance of equipment and facilities. The Emerging Media Supervisor leads the development and implementation of programs and services to support emerging media needs in teaching, learning and scholarship.

The position supports faculty, students and staff who design and develop emerging media tools and techniques including but not limited to virtual realiry (VR), augmented reality (AR), brain computer interface (BCI) and artificial intelligence (AI). The position oversees and performs outreach with community both within and ouside UBC and coordinate and organize related events. This position requires advanced knowledge of emerging technologies, pedogagy, customer service, communication, project management, and organizational skills.

Organizational Status

EML is an experimental space where faculty, students, and staff from all disciplines collaborate with industry and community. Its mission is to evolve learning by creating tools and techniques using emerging media including Augmented, Mixed, and Virtual Reality. The position will work in collaboration with the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology and other departments across campus. The position requires extensive contact with researchers, course instructors, students, and staff.

Work Performed

Key Duties:

- Designs, develops and implements programming and services within the Emerging Media Lab.
- Collaborates with related UBC departments EML faculties to explore, design and provide support in emerging technologies for the UBC community.
- Collaborates with faculty, students, and staff to contribute expertise to EML projects, in a range of disciplines.
- Leads presentations, workshops, and classes, and creates and shares learning materials and guides for users, to facilitate the creation of a variety of emerging media including VR, AR, XR, etc.
- Provides consultation, support, coaching, and training to users about tools, techniques, and methods.
- Writes and maintains documentation in accordance with prescribed standards.
- Works with the EML faculty team in the development of policy and procedures related to the Emerging Media Lab.
- Provides input to the establishment of policies and procedures pertaining to the Visualization and Emerging Media Studio.
- Partners with internal outreach teams and with campus service and support areas to promote and encourage use of campus visualization and emerging media creation, technology and spaces.
- Provides training and expert liaison for UBC faculty members across Faculties and Schools.
- Builds and maintains positive working relationships and collaborates with others to achieve research objectives.
- Supports software development lifecycle and follows appropriate programming/development methodologies and best practices.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The primary focus of this unit is to provide an experimental and exploration space for faculty, staff, students. This position coordinates the delivery of services at EML and promotion of the lab. Errors in judgment, poor planning, or failure to act decisively could have a detrimental effect on the delivery and use of EML resources by its users. Inappropriate judgment could potentially damage the reputation of EML, and could possibly have a negative impact on future partnerships.

Supervision Received

Works under the general direction of the Manager, UBC Studios. Must be able to work independently and carry out work to completion. Keeps Manager informed of the status of work in progress. Works on tasks to meet deadlines on various projects. Work is reviewed in terms of achievement of desired results.

Supervision Given

This position works as a member of the EML. This position will supervise EML staff as well as student staff and volunteers.
