Research Assistant (Mathematical Modelling)

ORGANIZATION: The BC-CfE is a world-renowned HIV/AIDS Centre with innovative, low barrier approach to healthcare delivery in clinical practice and an integrated group of research concentrations in Laboratory Sciences, Clinical Trials, Population Health and Epidemiology, Health Economics and Professional Education Programs. A multidisciplinary team of clinicians including Physicians, Nurses, Social Workers and Peers and researchers including Health Economists, Epidemiologists, Clinical Researchers, Statisticians, Programmers, and Data Analysts work collaboratively to improve the health of British Columbians with HIV and communities facing socio-economic barriers in accessing healthcare.
JOB SUMMARY: The Research Assistant (Mathematical Modelling) conducts various analytical and programming tasks required to develop and conduct detailed population-based mathematical modelling analysis of HIV, hepatitis C (HCV), and other infectious diseases.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design and run simulations of infectious diseases (population level)
- Conduct data analysis
- Estimate model parameters from empirical data
- Conduct a systematic and critical review of the literature
- Maintain strict confidentiality related to identification and release of study data
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience
- Master’s degree or equivalent in infectious disease epidemiology, population biology, mathematics, theoretical physics, computer science or a similar quantitative discipline. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of epidemiology
- Excellent computing skills (preferably Python or Matlab), experience with version control, unit tests, writing clear and readable code
- Good working knowledge of deterministic models and complex individual-based/network models
- Good working knowledge of ODEs, linear algebra, calculus, basic statistics
- Ability to prioritize work and deliver to tight deadlines
- Ability to interact with other academics, especially in other disciplines represented at the BC-CfE and the project team
- Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication and to creatively and efficiently present results
- Ability to organise own work with mínimal supervision
