**Overview**
The Controller leads and directs all accounting and financial services at Vantage. This position oversees all budget management, financial analysis, resource management, forecasting, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, taxes, financial reporting, and audit requirements. The Controller plays an integral role in assuring the financial viability and sustainability of the organization and follows accounting best practices, regulatory requirements, financial reporting standards, and tax regulations.

As part of the Senior Leadership Team, the Controller works with the CEO and other directors to ensure that Vantage is underpinned by good governance including fiscal management and accountability, integrity, transparency, and strong leadership. In addition, this position mentors other senior leaders in financial literacy to make well-informed strategic decisions about resource allocation, program development, scenario planning, and expansion. This helps to ensure alignment with Vantage’s overall goals while mitigating financial risks. This position has a critical role in the organization’s adherence to PDD funding requirements and CET standards.

The Controller also leads and supervises the Finance Team and ensures that staff are equipped and empowered to succeed in their roles.

**ACCOUNTABILITIES**

**1. Oversee all accounting and financial operations to ensure Vantage’s financial health to achieve its mandate**
- Manage the PDD contract and ensure that all funding requirements are met
- Create and implement budgets for all programs/departments to maintain fiscal responsibility including cash flow forecasting
- Monitor expenditures to ensure cost-effective approaches are being taken by all programs and departments of the organization
- Monitor variances, summarize trends, and investigate notable budget deficiencies
- Oversee full cycle accounting including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and the general ledger including year-end preparation and adjustments
- Prepare, analyze, and present monthly, quarterly, and annual operating results for the CEO and other senior leaders
- Oversee revenue billing and payroll processing
- Ensure financial and reporting requirements are met for any grant funding that is received
- Manage agency insurance policies
- Liaise with external auditors as required
- Ensure timely collection of receivables by refining and implementing control mechanisms
- Assign and authorize cheques, purchase orders, and invoices
- Lead the implementation of all finance-related initiatives in the strategic plan including the development of project plans with activities and stipulated timelines

**2. Provide expertise and guidance so that Vantage is following accounting best practices, complying with corresponding legislation, and mitigating financial risk**
- Ensure compliance with legislation including supplementary accounting principles and standards
- Establish and monitor internal controls to ensure that accounting activities are in accordance with established legal regulatory requirements and agency policies and procedures
- Conduct periodic internal audits to ensure accuracy and completeness of accounting records and prepare for year-end audit
- Identify and implement efficiencies in financial processes

**3. Provide recommendations and input on the use of financial resources to ensure alignment with organizational strategy and sustainability**
- Mentor other senior leaders in improving their financial literacy to make strategic decisions about resource allocation, program development, scenario planning, and expansion
- Participate and provide input at Senior Leadership Team meetings and any strategic planning to ensure alignment with the organizational strategy and mid to long-term goals
- Set strategic departmental goals that are aligned with the overarching organization and department/program goals as part of the strategic planning process
- Manage finance-related projects effectively to achieve departmental goals within stipulated timelines and using appropriate resources.
- Monitor accounting analytics to identify potential areas of concern and address them in a timely manner.
- Provide support so that CET standards are met and exceeded, where possible

**4. Effectively supervise the Finance Team so they are empowered and equipped to successfully execute their responsibilities**
- Ensure 1:1s and informal check-ins are done on a regular basis throughout the performance management cycle
- Ensure annual performance goals are set, ongoing feedback is provided, and performance reviews are done in a timely manner
- Support staff through ongoing coaching, mentoring, and supporting job-related formal and informal training
- Empower staff to make decisions confidently based on the delegated authority given to that position level
- Foster a culture of recognition and appreciation
