Under the direction of the Nursing Professional Practice Manager and Clinical Nurse Educator (Simulation Program), the Technical Simulations Specialist ensures the optimal use and maintenance of Simulations systems and equipment which support hospital activities and priorities through health care based simulations. The Technical Simulations Specialist is responsible for a wide variety of tasks to support and assist in simulation education and training, and staff development activities. Appling knowledge, technical and mechanical experience, they support the implementation and maintenance of simulation programs with a focus on equipment within the Simulation Program at Queensway Carleton Hospital. The Technical Simulations Specialist provides operational, technical, troubleshooting and maintenance support for the simulation mannequins, computers, audiovisual (A/V) technologies, and interfacing surrounding medical equipment within the Simulations Program. They work collaboratively to collect data that will inform research grant submissions and improve ongoing improvement operation.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**Technical Support**
- Maintain current knowledge of simulation/lab equipment catalogs and operation manuals
- Program simulator software to model simulator's physiological response to instructor specifications
- Provide first level support to learners utilizing the Simulations Program for continued education and development
- Operate patient simulators and cameras for the duration of simulations
- Operates and maintains audio-visual and debriefing systems
- Sets up and takes down simulation laboratory equipment
- Rapid turnover of simulation lab set up as needed
- Maintain and repair all simulation equipment, including:

- Patient simulators, computers, monitors and a variety of medical equipment
- Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and contact vendors when required
- Collaborate with supervisor to organize, maintain, and restock skills lab and simulation laboratory supplies
- Provide technical support for task trainers and multimedia peripherals including:

- Beds/examination tables, headwalls, patient monitors, and other health care equipment
- Medication dispensing systems
- Vital sign monitors
- Provides theatrical production (costuming and moulage) for simulation scenarios as requested
- Implements moulage (mix fake body fluids and create wounds)
- Provide technical assistance, support and training to faculty, instructors, and staff in use of simulation equipment
- Set up and maintain surgical/procedural simulators
- Set up and maintain computer-based training programs
- Maintain simulation activities and learner confidentiality

**System Analysis**
- Assist with documenting simulation exercise processes to facilitate system design and implementation
- Provides recommendations on equipment, supplies and materials
- Collect data for ongoing research or grant requirements

**REQUIREMENTS**:
**Education and Experience**:

- Post secondary education in a related field such as Computer Science, Management Information, Technology, Film, Medical technology or Health care discipline, or;
- Two to three years’ experience working in a health care simulations setting
- Combination of education, training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in possession of the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of this position
- Experience in computer technology and troubleshooting
- Familiarity with PC and Mac platforms
- Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy/physiology
- Experience with providing technical support in networking, computer hardware or software

**Other Requirements**:

- Clinical knowledge and experience working in a healthcare related field such as EMT, paramedic, or other allied health profession certification and training
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) to interact with and work effectively with other faculty, staff, students, and vendors in a positive, helpful, and cooperative working relationship
- Skills in operating a PC and Mac with experience in MS Office and Office 365, and the ability to learn additional software programs, including audiovisual and computerized simulation equipment
- Knowledge of operation of standard audio-visual equipment: projectors, microphones, portable screens, media players, etc.
- Mechanical skills to competently maintain and use equipment in the simulation center
- Organizational and time management skills to keep materials in order, track various projects, maintain files, and follow through assignments to completion
