Your Opportunity:
This is a unique, challenging, and exciting opportunity to join the Neurosciences team in a managerial capacity. The Unit Manager oversees the Neuro ICU, the High Intensity Unit (HIU) and the Stroke Observation unit at the University of Alberta Hospital. In this position, you will be a clinical leader, mentor, and advocate. You will support your staff to ensure the team can provide high quality patient-centered care. The Neuro ICU is 1 of 2 stand-alone Neurosciences ICUs in the country and services the Edmonton & North zones, and the Territories, for all cranial neurosurgery, neurovascular, acute stroke management, and specialized spine care. This ICU also specializes in the care of organ donation patients in the Edmonton zone. As the Unit Manager, you will be responsible for leading change management and quality improvement, promoting team development, and coordinating and managing staffing and clinical services. You will also be responsible for clinical supervision, recruitment, and budget management. Building knowledge and capacity, influencing innovation, and building confidence for change are key responsibilities in this role. You have opportunity in this position to support quality improvement initiatives and cutting-edge work through supporting and developing exciting initiatives and program development. Skills in critical and analytical thinking, decision making, communication, teamwork, prioritization, time management, advocacy and conflict management are required to be a successful leadership team member. You will also demonstrate passion in team engagement, coaching, and professional development including the ability to foster a climate of collaboration building solid relationships between inter-professional team members.

Description:
The Unit Manager is accountable and responsible for the effective and efficient operation of an assigned unit or patient care area within a specific program including the management of human, material and financial resources. The Unit Manager’s primary role is to support optimum patient care and unit operations through monitoring and organizing the workflow and delivery of patient care in the unit including daily staffing schedules, patient assignment and classification. The functions and responsibilities of the position are executed within the context of the unit goals. The Unit Manager is expected to provide leadership in providing quality patient care. Essential to this leadership role is the use of effective communication skills with the Patient Care Manager, other Unit Managers, Clinical Nurse Educators, Nurse Practitioners, staff and other department representatives.

**Required Qualifications**:
Active registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). BCLS- HCP required. Minimum 3 to 5 years of recent ICU nursing experience required (including completion of OPACCA or equivalent).

A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is preferred. Previous Management or Formal Leadership is preferred. Minimum 1 to 2 years of Neuroscience experience preferred. Minimum 2 years of Charge Nurse Experience preferred. Experience with change management is preferred.
