**Crop Protection Team Assistant**

A day in the life of a **Crop Protection Team Assistant **offers endless ways for you to showcase your natural curiosity and observant nature while exploring the world of Integrated Pest Management.

You arrive at the office and jump into reviewing the day’s work plan with your Crop Protection Team Lead. There is rain in the forecast so you gear up for the elements, equip yourself with your trusty sticky cards (traps to catch and monitor pests) and clipboard, and head out to scout the growing areas on your list. You systematically work area by area, tapping for insects, and checking and switching out sticky cards as required before returning to the office to record your findings.

After lunch, you discuss your crop observations with your Team Lead, soak in some outbound plant inspections and GCP/CNCP protocol training, get a solid start on your research for this week’s “Pest of the Week”, and begin preparation for the next major biological release -your favorite opportunity to see beneficial insects at work

**Job Summary**:
As a Crop Protection Assistant, you contribute to the everyday Integrated Pest Management program at Qualitree and play an essential role in ensuring crop success. You work closely with peers in the Crop Protection Team to ensure scouting and data collection is completed according to protocol. Additionally, as Crop Protection Assistant, you contribute to the prevention and treatment plans as outcomes from data interpretation.

This position reports directly to the Crop Protection Team Lead, and on a day-to-day basis there is a collaborative relationship with peers on the Crop Protection Team. As Crop Protection Assistant, you work primarily among the plants, in growing spaces.

After learning the tasks of the position, as well as becoming knowledgeable as to how the company operates, it is expected that you will be able to work independently and with autonomy in this role.

**What We Need From You**:

- Previous experience or education in agriculture, ecology, biology, and/or entomology is a strong asset
- Knowledge of disease and insect identification is a preference
- Confident self-starter and team player, with a strong motivation to learn
- A strong eye for detail, diligence, and patience is required for successful scouting and data collection
- Sharp eyesight for identification of pests
- Technical knowledge of the plants grown at the company is a preference
- Must be willing to participate in training for WCB, WHMIS, first aid and potentially obtaining a BC Pesticide Applicators License

**Your Duties Will Include**:

- Contributing to Qualitree’s goal of a biologically-friendly IPM program
- Working towards understanding precursors to disease and insect life cycles
- Scouting Qualitree crops on a weekly basis; identifying common insect pests and beneficials, as well as disease (training is provided). This includes but is not limited to setting up and evaluating sticky traps, pheromone traps, tapping and inspection of plants, collecting samples, and mite brushing.
- Data collection, interpretation, and entry pertaining to scouting findings
- Assisting with records related to scouting as required
- Assisting with biological control agent (BCA) releases and documentation as required
- Assisting with research and documentation as required
- Assisting with Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) (Greenhouse Certification Program (GCP)/Canadian Nursery Certification Program (CNCP)) related inspections of outbound shipments, ensuring crops are shipping in compliance with program thresholds
- Evaluating effectiveness of pest and disease control methods

**Working Conditions**:

- This is a full-time position, Monday to Friday, with flexible hours
- During the main growing season (March-October) the Crop Protection Assistant may be required to work irregular hours depending on the weather and operational requirements.
