The Communications and External Relations Unit is central to the establishment and maintenance of strategic communications initiatives including brand identity, to support and enhance the goals of the organization over the long term.

Reporting directly to the Director, Communications and External Relations, the Public Affairs Strategist leads key strategic and operational discussions and decisions on communications issues, priorities, systems, processes, performance indicators and plays a critical role in managing community relations, media relations, issues management of a complex nature, government relations, special events coordination and public affairs outreach.

**Responsibilities**:
Tasks may include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Develops and implements strategies to enhance the awareness, understanding and support for NOSM U amongst key publics such Northern Ontario municipalities, organizations, donors and alumni.
- Works with the Director of Communications and External Relations to develop objectives, set priorities, and participate in planning for the unit.
- Manages, supervises and develops staff in the unit, including: hiring staff, providing orientation, training and development opportunities, establishes performance standards, conducts performance reviews.
- Supports the President and the Board with strategic communications
- Develops strategies to support NOSM U’s Strategic Plan.
- Plans and implements strategies to maximize outreach of the products prepared by the Communications team. This is done to increase visibility and support NOSM U. It is performed by identifying key target publics for each of the products and strategic tactics to reach them.
- Establishes external relations to position NOSM U activities and interests in a consistent, positive and effective manner. This is done to ensure that the interests, concerns and long-term objectives of NOSM U are understood and considered by senior government officials at both the political and departmental levels. This is achieved via maintaining excellent relations with communication counterparts in key Provincial departments such as: Ministry of Colleges and Universities, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, Ministry of Indigenous Affairs, as well as other funding agencies and organizations.
- Monitors and reviews current and emerging external and NOSM U issues, devises and recommends strategies or actions to minimize any negative impact on NOSM U’s reputation, and maximizes any positive spin-off. This is done by providing advice to leadership across NOSM U concerning the public implications of issues and programs for which they are responsible. The management of these actions involves the utilization of the entire spectrum of public affairs and vehicles including: events, print, radio, television, displays, etc.
- Responds to media inquiries in a way that portrays NOSM U in the best possible light. Responses are prepared in a timely, accurate and strategic fashion. Leads a proactive media outreach effort to enhance NOSM U’s relationship with key media contacts. This is done by conducting media briefings, tours and seminars, to educate the media on NOSM U’s activities. Media releases, media kits and fact sheets and other print or electronic materials are prepared and distributed as required.
- Oversees external media monitoring including publications and broadcasts to ensure accuracy and taking prompt corrective action when errors are detected in media reports. Coordinates and conducts special events for projects, milestones, and completions/results of projects, anniversaries, and visits by dignitaries and VIPS guests to NOSM U. Identifies speaking opportunities for NOSM U executives. This involves the development and implementation of the overall strategy and specific plans including, writing of speeches and/or speaking points for senior officials, elaborating a guest list, issuing of invitations, the production of hospitality plans, selection of gifts and souvenir items, and the arrangement of protocol, security and publicity.

**Qualifications**:
**Education**:

- A University degree from a recognized university that meets Canadian accreditation standards in related field (e.g. communications, journalism, etc.), or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required
- IABC or CPRS accreditation highly desirable.

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:

- Minimum of five (5) years directly related experience is required.
