**Department summary**

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta is a diverse department which spans the physical and social sciences. Dr. Tara McGee is hiring a research assistant to conduct research as part of the Human Dimensions of Hazards Research group. The research group conducts social science research focusing on wildfire prevention, mitigation, preparedness, and evacuations. Dr. McGee also co-leads the First Nations Wildfire Evacuation Partnership

**Position summary**

The 2023 fire season in Canada has caused devastating impacts across the country and beyond. Evacuations are the main protective measure used in Canada to protect public safety during wildfires. The host communities where evacuees stay during the wildfire play an important role in ensuring the safety of people who leave their communities during an evacuation. The research assistant will conduct research with communities that hosted wildfire evacuees during the 2023 wildfires in Alberta.

**Duties**
- Carry out research with communities that hosted evacuees during the 2023 wildfires in Alberta.
- Conduct interviews with key stakeholders in a sample of host communities.
- Analyze interview data.
- Assist with dissemination of research findings.

**Qualifications**
- A Masters degree in human geography or a related social science field
- Experience conducting qualitative social science research including interviewing and qualitative data analysis
- Self-directed, with the ability to work independently to conduct research according to a specific timeline
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Ability to work both as part of a team and independently
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in work practices
