Edmonton, Canada African Canadian Civic Engagement Council Full time

**About the Role**:
The Access to Justice Manager at ACCEC is a critical leadership role responsible for ensuring the delivery of effective and high-quality services that address the justice-related needs of ACCEC's clients, with a specific focus on marginalized communities. The Manager oversees all justice-involved issues, including leading ACCEC's Impact of Race and Culture Assessment (IRCA) initiative and identifying and leading justice policy opportunities. This role also involves representing ACCEC at justice-related forums and coordinating support for youth in the justice system.

**Sankofa Justice Initiative**:
At ACCEC, we recognize and value the vast knowledge and diverse perspectives of African Indigenous peoples, and all people of African descent. Through the Sankofa Justice Initiative (SJI), the Manager will work to address the overrepresentation of African Canadians in the legal systems in Alberta. The SJI program aligns with ACCEC’s mission to empower and advance the rights and opportunities of people of African descent in Canada through high-quality services, research, policy analysis, and advocacy. Sankofa, a West African word meaning "go back and recover it," symbolizes the spirit of SJI, rooted in culture, healing, and reconciliation through ancestral wisdom and knowledge.

**Key Responsibilities**:
1. Program Development and Management:

- Develop and implement the Access to Justice program strategy, including annual plans and budgets, to achieve program goals and objectives.
- Coordinate and manage the Impact of Race and Culture Assessment (IRCA) initiative, ensuring that assessments are conducted effectively and meet ACCEC's standards.
- Lead the development and delivery of high-quality services and support to clients, including court accompaniment, legal referrals, and advocacy.

2. Sankofa Justice Initiative Implementation:

- Lead the implementation of SJI initiatives, including the Legal Directory, IRCA, Education/Awareness, and Healing Circles.
- Develop partnerships with legal firms, deliver training on trauma-informed care and anti-Black racism, and provide restorative justice circles.

3. Advocacy and Policy Development:

- Identify and lead justice policy opportunities for ACCEC, advocating for changes that align with the organization's mission and goals.
- Represent ACCEC at justice-related events, conferences, and meetings.
- Develop and implement communication strategies to raise awareness of ACCEC's Access to Justice services and advocate for policy change.

4. Stakeholder Collaboration:

- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, legal organizations, and community groups.

5. Support for Youth in the Justice System:

- Coordinate support services for youth involved in the justice system, including legal aid, counseling, and mentorship.
- Develop programs aimed at preventing youth involvement in the justice system and supporting those already involved.

6. Data Analysis and Reporting:

- Collect and analyze data to monitor the impact of ACCEC's Access to Justice services and make recommendations for improvements.
- Monitor developments in the legal and policy landscape related to access to justice and marginalized communities.

7. Team Management:

- Manage the Access to Justice team, providing mentorship and support to staff and volunteers.
- Ensure that ACCEC's Access to Justice program aligns with relevant legislation, regulations, and best practices.

8. Cross-Functional Contribution:

- Contribute to the overall success of ACCEC by participating in cross-functional teams and initiatives

**Qualifications**:
1. Education and Experience:

- A master's degree in social work, law, or a related field is preferred. A bachelor's degree with significant relevant experience will also be considered.
- At least 5 years of experience in a management role, ideally within the legal or justice systems.
- Proven experience in legal research, policy development, or program management in a justice-related field.

2. Skills and Competencies:

- Proven ability to develop and implement successful program strategies.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Ability to manage a team and provide mentorship and support to staff and volunteers.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Strong knowledge of issues facing African-descent communities in the justice system.
- Strong court and systems navigation skills.

We thank all applicants for their interest. Only individuals selected for interviews will be contacted.
