SUMMARY
The Chief Payments Officer (CPO) is responsible for the development and ongoing management of Payments Canada's external ecosystem relationships with members, regulators, and stakeholders. The CPO leads the thinking and oversees the evolution of Canada’s payments systems and ancillary services, with responsibility for leading payments system-related innovation across the organization.
The CPO leverages forward-thinking insights to build and address payment system related market gaps, increase impact, and maximize the potential of existing systems. They will oversee the design and delivery of large payments system-related programs while working closely with internal and external stakeholders. The incumbent will be viewed as a partner by members, regulators, and stakeholders, leading a talented team focused on delivering strong external relationships, producing sound research and policy frameworks, and identifying opportunities for strategic payment system-focused innovation. As well, the CPO will provide strong people leadership and direction to several key teams and direct reports.

Leadership, People, and Team Development
- Develop, implement, and maintain a divisional strategy in line with the organizational strategy, designed to enhance existing services over the longer term, and to proactively identify opportunities for new services.
- Provide strong leadership to the divisional team, ensuring the necessary tools and support are in place to enable the team to be successful.
- Monitor and measure performance of divisional goals against Payments Canada’s strategic goals, as well as company objectives as defined in the corporate scorecard.
- Attract and retain employees with the skill sets and competencies needed to deliver Payments Canada’s strategic priorities.
- Be accountable for all aspects of the talent management cycle (i.e., workforce planning, recruitment, performance management, staff development, succession) for the team, including developing individual development plans for team members and supporting a culture of continuous learning and development.
- Provide leadership to the team through support for Payments Canada’s vision; ensure that the necessary tools and support are in place to enable the team to succeed.
- Strengthen the team's capabilities to create and nurture external relationships that focus on stakeholder engagement.
- Champion Payments Canada’s culture, both internally and externally.
- Establish and operate within budget, ensuring compliance with budgetary and financial administration requirements.
- Encourage an open and energetic working environment and, by example, demonstrate that the team supports the entire organization to meet internal/external objectives.
Payment System Strategy and Innovation
- Develop a comprehensive innovation and payment system strategy for the company, which includes enhancements and the introduction of new capabilities to payments systems and the supporting legal frameworks..
- Ensure payment systems roadmaps reflect regulatory requirements, and are informed by, and aligned with, the strategic objectives of current and future members.
- Align the payment systems roadmaps and support projects with the overall direction, objectives, and priorities of the company.
- Oversee the design and delivery of industry-focused payments systems-related programs, working closely with internal and external stakeholders
- Support Payments Canada’s culture of idea sharing and collaboration across departments.
External Relations and Communications
- Oversee and evolve Payment Canada’s ecosystem engagement strategy.
- Identify and ensure alignment between the objectives of all functions reporting to this role.
- Executive responsibility for the continued development and integrity of Payments Canada’s brand, including the annual Payments SUMMIT event.
