Director, Quality, Cultural Safety

**Job Description**:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Island Health is committed to working with Indigenous communities and partners to plan and deliver culturally safe health-care services and to deliver on its goal of excellent health and care for everyone, everywhere, every time. Working closely with various leaders across portfolios, such as the People Portfolio and the Patient Care Quality Office, the Director, Cultural Safety and Humility has a key leadership role in supporting system change to address Indigenous specific racism within Island Health programs and services.
Reporting to the Executive Director, Indigenous Health, the Director supports the organization to improve culturally safe care for patients, families and staff by providing sound decision making and advising on best practices and action plans on the implementation of strategies, and evaluating supports including metrics.
Acknowledging the organization has the responsibility to strengthen the capacity to respond to Indigenous specific racism and to provide culturally safe, respectful, and racism-free healthcare services, the Director promotes, advocates and supports the interpretation and animation of provincial mandates, organizational directions and portfolio priorities into operational strategies, while working collaboratively with First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), Métis Nations BC (MNBC) and First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities. The Director works closely with the Director, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion to encourage leaders at all levels throughout the organization to advance culturally safe care.
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education, Training And Experience**:
A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Masters' Degree and specific education and/or demonstrated knowledge in the areas of cultural safety & humility; anti-racism; anti-colonial change management; adult education; healthcare systems, and/or project management and at least five (5) years in a role within a healthcare organization with experience in the areas of leadership, initiative development and implementation, system planning, financial and information management, and change management.
**Skills And Abilities**:
- Ability to lead with cultural safety and humility at all times.
- Knowledge of the historical and ongoing impacts of colonialism and Indigenous specific racism on Indigenous Peoples and health care systems.
- Ability to integrate relevant reports and research into practice relating to cultural safety and humility;
- Ability to perform and uphold Indigenous-led research models and amplify the voices of Indigenous Knowledge Keepers.
- Aptitude to responding to changing priorities and opportunities with tact, skill and intention.
- Ability to work collaboratively with and providing leadership to diverse groups and individuals.
- Ability to lead and/or support collaborative and diverse partnership work across various organizations, including with Indigenous stakeholders.
- Willingness to promote solutions and engages in activities that move the portfolio and organization forward in its commitment to creating culturally safer care and services.
- Ability to identify ways that the organization can further support cultural safety and humility throughout all programs, services, portfolios and leadership levels.
- Strong communication skills including the ability to facilitate, negotiate, and influence both internal and external stakeholders.
- Knowledge of current healthcare issues and trends with a focus on Indigenous Health.
- Ability to provide leadership, guidance, and direction to others including managers and staff.
