The Nova Scotia Museum consisting of 28 museum sites, is the most decentralized museum in Canada. It is also one of the oldest provincial museums in the country. The Nova Scotia Museum is responsible for the provincial collection of over one million artifacts and specimens housed at museum sites and storage facilities across the province.
**About Our Opportunity**:
The Manager of the Museum of Industry leads a team of interpreters, technicians, and visitor services staff and is responsible for operations at the Museum of Industry, a part of the Nova Scotia Museum. The Manager is responsible for overall development and delivery of Museum of Industry operations in accordance with strategies, policy and/or regulations.
The Manager assumes a lead role in enhancing all aspects of museum operations, including visitor services, interpretation, collections and infrastructure. The Manager works in collaboration with Archives, Museums and Libraries staff to ensure the Museum of Industry goals align with those of the broader department, and to ensure that the museum represents its mandate.
The Manager works collaboratively across the Nova Scotia Museum system, Archives, Museum and Libraries and the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, as well as across government and with various stakeholders and sectors to build collaborative relationships and innovate.
The Manager of Collections reports to the Director, Nova Scotia Museum.
**Primary Accountabilities**:
- Accountable for strategic and operational leadership through direction, planning, evaluation, and implementation requiring experience with and knowledge of legislation, regulations, policies, and programs to support museum, departmental and government priorities.
- Accountable for managing the financial and human resources of the Museum of Industry, including development and management of budgets for the Museum of Industry.
- Ensures proper protocols regarding procurement and financial expenditures are adhered to.
- Initiates, plans and manages implementation of interpretive renewal and innovative programming at the Museum of Industry.
- Oversees team of interpreters, technicians, collections staff and visitor services staff developing work plans, strategies and procedures to ensure priorities are met and activities align with broader departmental goals (Culture Action Plan)
- Provides Ministerial briefings, handles media enquiries, develops speaking notes and provides direction to executive leadership
- Ensuring mechanisms are in place for managers to monitor and report operational issues on policies, planning and solutions for identified issues.
- Reviews programs and implements plans for efficiencies and innovation.
- Works with stakeholders and partners to develop museum programming.
- Works with contractors and manages the museum’s role in infrastructure projects.
- Responsible for overseeing Human Resource policies at the Museum of Industry.
- Promotes diversity and a healthy workplace, ensure respectful workplace standards are met.
**Qualifications and Experience**:
To be successful in this role you have a University degree in a relevant discipline combined with 7 years of related work experience. You also have knowledge and experience in museum management best practices and the demonstrated ability to clearly communicate museum-related issues to diverse audiences, this should be clearly demonstrated in your cover letter and resume.
- Political and museum acumen is required._
You have strong interpersonal skills, and the demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate a large team of specialists, while valuing a diverse, and inclusive work environment. You demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills and have a proven ability to be innovative, lead and execute addressing issues and demands with diplomacy and tact. You have time management skills to successfully develop and manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines. You can develop and maintain partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, and have demonstrated skills in maintaining these relationships on interpretation and building maintenance projects.
