Ethica Coffee Roasters is a Toronto-based combination coffee roastery, coffee school, and café offering quality products and high-level service in Toronto’s West end. We primarily focus on roasting and selling high-grade single-origin coffees, healthy snacks, and related equipment. Along with the above-mentioned, Ethica Coffee Roasters also provides its modern industrial space for thematic and educational events, and to just spend time in pleasant ambiance with excellent service. We also do our best to be a contributing part of our community, often opening our space as a workspace for local artists.

Our cafè is located at 213 Sterling Rd, Toronto, ON, M6R 2B2.

Our production facility and coffee school are located at 100 Symes Road, Unit 111, Toronto, ON, M6N 5C9.

Ethica is looking for a **Coffee Director** to join our team. This is a supervisory position focused on overseeing both the roasting and coffee preparation process at Ethica. Knowledge of coffee brewing, coffee service, and coffee roasting is required. Specifically, the duties and responsibilities of a **Coffee Director** at Ethica include the following:

- Develop and approve coffee roasting schedules, including setting times and determining volumes for roasting in response to product demand;
- Organize coffee roasting operation to ensure that specialty-grade green coffee and labour costs remain within established goals while still meeting output targets;
- Requisition and ensure the proper storage of specialty green coffee as required to meet roasting targets. Supervise the proper storage of roasted coffee;
- Supervise and optimize the coffee packaging process;
- Research and test (with senior management approval) new potential products, such as finding new and exciting producers of specialty green coffee or experimenting with new brewing methods;
- Research developing food, equipment, and point of sale technologies and make suggestions to management regarding possible improvements for coffee processing or workflow;
- Assist with development of coffee menu and implementation of new brew methods;
- Organize café coffee service by delegating tasks to baristas and the coffee roaster, ensuring efficient workflow without compromising coffee quality;
- Educate baristas in proper coffee preparation to ensure that coffee production is consistent with Specialty Coffee Association (“SCA”) standards;
- Supervise staff involved in coffee preparation and roasting processes to ensure high quality of product;
- Provide regular coaching and feedback to baristas and the coffee roaster, and assess barista and coffee roaster performance on a monthly basis;
- Maintain records of any maintenance issues and report them to management;
- Assist senior management with evaluation of potential new employees and provide input on hiring decision of café and roastery staff;
- Liaise with wholesale customers to ensure the standards of the specialty coffee industry are met and maintained throughout;
- Prepare production and personal performance reports, to be submitted to senior management, for the purpose of identifying any opportunities for improvement or trouble areas;
- Occasionally support baristas during service or the coffee roaster during the bulk roasting process.

To be considered for the position, applicants must have the following education and experience:

- A higher education degree;
- Minimum of 3 years supervising and quality control experience with a staff of 5+ within food and beverage service;
- Experienced with use of roast profiling software Cropster;
- Proficient in operating coffee roasting equipment.

The term of employment will be **permanent**, at a rate of an estimated **40 hours per week**.

This is a salaried position with an annual salary of **$59,280.00**. Standard deductions (CPP, EI) will apply. Health insurance is also included, and transportation expenses will be covered.

The location of work will be **Toronto, Ontario**, at both the 213 Sterling Road and 100 Symes Road locations, as required.

The work will be performed in the **English **language.
