**Position Overview**
**Student and Enrolment Services** is currently seeking a Full-time Regular **Harm Reduction Support Advisor.**
Reporting to the Manager, Student Wellness Support, the Harm Reduction Support Advisor works with other members of the Student Support and Case Management and Health Promotion teams to sustain a student outreach and case management portfolio in the area of harm reduction. The harm reduction support advisor will specifically attend to potentially vulnerable populations within the university that may require specialized support. This role provides mental health support and outreach to students experiencing substance misuse issues and assesses students presenting with mental health issues to health and counseling services within Wellness Services, and makes referrals to relevant internal and external resources. The position supports enriched quality and breadth of learning in the university community by coordinating proactive and consistent harm reduction support and response.
The harm reduction support advisor provides leadership by intervening and consulting when students are at risk, and engaging with student communities on an outreach basis thereby promoting student retention and success. This position supports students in providing a harm reduction program and works with those who are misusing substances or in need of support and is in line with the academic priorities of the Academic Plan.
The successful applicant will work within an inter-professional healthcare model to engage multiple professions to collaborate in creating and promoting a healthy university community. The Harm reduction support advisor also provides intake support for students presenting in crisis in need of immediate mental health assessment. This position is responsible for building connections and facilitating referrals between students, university and community resources and promoting intercultural literacy.
The Harm reduction support advisor will also require a high level of independent judgment and initiative, in addition to tact, diplomacy and ethical decision making in dealing with students, staff members and external agencies. This position works with ever changing student needs and must be able to ethically assess complex risk for both the individual student and the broader campus community.
**Position Description**
**Summary of Key Responsibilities** (job functions include but are not limited to):
**Student Relations**:
- Be first point of contact for students in the pursuit of counselling services for individual and couple wellbeing
- Support students with substance misuse issues, including outreach and facilitating community and internal referrals
- Share responsibility in student engagement and service with the aim of providing support to all students who contact Student Wellness Services
- Contribute to a warm, supportive, and non-judgmental atmosphere for, students, graduate practicum students, interns, and staff
- Meet with students referred by the campus community for being potentially at-risk
- Provide mental health triage and assessment function to assess the needs and level of risk of students with the intent of providing appropriate service/referral and reducing barriers to counseling
- Assess emergent nature of intakes and prioritize appointments accordingly
- Connect students to internal and external resources
- Work collaboratively with other members of the Student-at-Risk team and Student Wellness Services staff
**Program Development and Outreach**:
- Work with the Student Substance Use Advisory group
- Deliver supportive programming in the areas of substance misuse
- In collaboration with other mental health services staff, assist in developing a substance misuse program
- Assess the needs of vulnerable student communities, particularly international, Indigenous and other at-risk communities
- Ensure broad consultation with students and communities regarding programs and delivery
- Ensure currency in intercultural and diversity issues in all programming considerations
- Recommend and deliver programming and training in regards to working with and supporting at risk student behaviors
- Promote education/mental health literacy to support the broader university community in supporting students
- Establish collaborative relationships with Residence, Student and Enrolment Services units, faculties and external referral sources to support students
**Administration**:
- Administer established protocol and procedures
- Collect intake and case management reporting data
- Document intake and case management interactions within client files
- Initiate registration of first-time clients and returning clients if the file has been closed
- Follow-up with students referred to online resources to determine referral success and/or additional service needs
**Qualifications / Requirements**:
- Masters degree in social work preferred
- 3 year's experience working in mental health
