Student Support Advisor, Academic and Wellness

**Description**
The Student Support Advisor reports to the Manager, DVM Program Administration and works with other members of the UCVM community to provide academic and wellbeing support to students within UCVM. This requires working closely with a variety of staff and a variety of internal and external stakeholders. (e.g. Therapists, Student Accessibility Services, Student Success Centre, Student Wellness and other community agencies) who provide academic support, mental health, well-being, and social support to students at the University of Calgary.
This position will work from the Spy Hill Campus though travel to the Foothills Campus is to be expected. This may include travel between campuses during a workday. Therefore, access to reliable transportation is essential. The position works 35 hours a week, Monday to Friday, but on occasion there may be the need to work outside of regular hours.
**Summary of Key Responsibilities** (job functions include but are not limited to):
Academic Support:
- Promote students' effective use of academic strategies by modeling and teaching a variety of study strategies in both individual and small group settings
- Assist students in identifying barriers to academic success and work with students to proactively help students improve academic and study skills
- Work with students to set goals and develop action plans for academic success. Monitor student progress towards achieving individual goals and adjust teaching strategies as required to promote student success
- Monitor student progress toward degree completion including all aspects related to academic review including but not limited to remediation, probation, requirement to withdraw, leave of absence, grade changes
Wellbeing Support:
- Meet with students 1:1 (face-to-face/virtual) who self-refer for mental health, well-being, &/or system navigation support, including being potentially at-risk
- Assess the emergent nature of intakes and prioritize appointments accordingly
- In consultation with, and direction from the Student Wellness team and UCVM therapists, report and escalate any risk disclosures to Student Wellness and UCVM therapists, immediately
- Provide a mental health triage function to assess the level of risk of students being referred or students presenting in crisis
- Provide short-term, solution-focused interventions to students to ensure they have the support required to achieve their identified goals
- Connect students to internal resources and provide appropriate referrals to mental health services in the community to support the treatment of complex or urgent mental health and well-being concerns
**Qualifications / Requirements**:
- Master's degree in social work, nursing, health sciences, psychology or related field
- 3 years experience working in mental health
- 2-3 years experience with crisis intervention, suicide intervention training and at-risk behaviors
- Experience working in a post-secondary environment (preferred)
- Experience with strategies for promoting academic success
- Ability to solve complex issues (e.g., students who are at-risk/ presenting in crisis)
- Effective communication skills and the ability to model these skills to students and staff
- Ability to exercise good judgement based on the analysis of multiple courses of information
- Strong leadership and organizational skills
- Demonstrate a strong regard for issues of confidentiality and dealing with highly sensitive material
- Demonstrate ability to work effectively with multiple departments, organizations, and people in sensitive and complex situations
