**Description**

The **Olympic Oval** in the **Faculty of Kinesiology** is currently seeking a Full-time Regular **Coach, Speed Skating**.

The Olympic Oval is the premier Winter Olympic legacy facility from the 1988 Winter Olympic Games as part of the University of Calgary's Faculty of Kinesiology. The facility provides programs and services for a number of local, national, and international stakeholders and is home to high performance athletes, world-class high performance programs, and excellent research. The Olympic Oval brings international recognition to the University of Calgary through the hosting of major international world class events, the training of high performance and Olympic athletes, and ongoing development of high performance programs.

The Oval provides a dynamic environment for Faculty of Kinesiology programs including Dino Athletics, Active Living, and various Faculty courses and research initiatives. Additionally, the Olympic Oval is recognized locally as a major part of the Calgary community providing public skating, events and bookable spaces for various public user groups and entities.

The Olympic Oval Speed Skating Coach will report to High Performance Sport Manager. This full-time position has a variable work schedule including evening and weekend hours. Extensive travel throughout the year is required, although most travel will occur in peak competition season.

**Summary of Key Responsibilities** (job functions include but are not limited to):
Coaching and Training
- Direct coaching, interaction, communication, and evaluation of elite pathway athletes, primarily Stages 1, 2, and 3
- Training program design and implementation, including technical and equipment aspects
- Ensures a holistic approach to athlete development.
- Contributes to the creation, implementation and monitoring of the Program as it relates to Oval athletes and their development path
- Provides video analysis of technique and race strategies to help athlete's progress
- Provides athlete evaluations for review
- Assists in the co-ordination of and conducts summer training camp for elite pathway athletes
- Attainment of the goals set out by the athletes, coaches and the administrative staff
- Shows initiative to ensure the success of the program area and perpetuate the strength of the team coaching concept.
- Demonstrates ethical leadership qualities and works to install the virtues of the fair play and sportsmanship in athletes and staff
- The individual will be required to work with the various provincial and local organizations in the development of short track speed skating
- Provides additional support as necessary to all level athletes in the elite athlete pathway
- Additional duties and tasks assigned by the High Performance Sport Manager

Budget and Financial Responsibilities
- Demonstrates responsibility for a set budget in their area
- Demonstrates respect for, and adheres to University policies and procedures

Communication and Professional Development
- Shows continued self-development and encourages it in others
- Works closely with the High Performance Sport Manager and Oval staff
- Maintains strong communication with athletes, peers and Oval staff
- Shows initiative and willingness to ensure the success of the Program area and perpetuate the strength of the team coaching concept
- Continual two-way exchange of knowledge and ideas with other coaches in the program
- Educates athletes on equipment maintenance
- Maintains contact with other Olympic Oval employees and attends meetings and functions as required to be kept aware of Oval information and functions
- Ensures continual professional development of self

**Qualifications / Requirements**:

- Fully Certified NCCP Level 3 Coach or equivalent from other related education
- Five years coaching experience at Provincial level and National competition experience
- Experience as a high performance athlete at the international level would be a definite asset
- Knowledge/experience of designing training programs and preparing for training camps and competitions
- Comprehensive knowledge of speed skating technique and race strategies and use of video analysis is required
- Experience working with speed skating equipment (i.e. blade bending, rockering machine, technical adjustments) is required
- In-depth knowledge of the LTPAD program of the Long and Short Track Elite Athlete Pathway curriculum of stages 1,2 and 3
- Strong communications and leadership skills to ensure continual performance and progression of the athletes
- Knowledge in the field of physiology
