Criminal Appeals and Special Prosecutions (CASP) has up to four permanent Crown Counsel Level 2/3 positions available with the E-Paxton (SkyECC) designated major case.

Crown Counsel assigned to a designated major case will be reassigned to other major cases at the conclusion of their assigned case or conclusion of their involvement in an assigned case.

A “major case” means one designated as such under the BC Prosecution Service’s Major Case Management (MCM) Model. MCM conducts the prosecutions of serious, complex, and lengthy cases that involve significant legal and security issues and require special knowledge and expertise. These cases may involve organized crime and/or gang-related matters.

Members of major case teams are required to have broad knowledge of both substantive and procedural aspects of criminal law, advanced research and computer skills, and well developed written and oral communication and advocacy abilities. They must also be able to work well as part of a larger team.

CASP is a division of the BC Prosecution Service (BCPS). The BCPS contributes to the protection of society by preparing for and conducting prosecutions diligently and fairly, and by striving to develop the most effective methods to administer justice in the Province. The BCPS prosecutes offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statutes in the Provincial, Supreme and Appeal Courts of British Columbia and in the Supreme Court of Canada. The BCPS provides legal advice to government and police on criminal law matters and develops policies and procedures on issues relating to the prosecution of criminal justice. The Assistant Deputy Attorney General is responsible for the administration of the BCPS, which is divided into the Office of the Assistant Deputy Attorney General, Criminal Appeals and Special Prosecutions, headed by a Director, and five regions which are each headed by a Regional Crown Counsel.

**Job Requirements**:

- Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Laws Degree from an accredited common law school.
- Membership in good standing in the Law Society of British Columbia or membership in good standing in another Canadian Law Society and immediately eligible to become a member of the Law Society of British Columbia.
- Crown Counsel Level 2: Counsel in their 6th to 11th year of call, with a minimum of 5 years’ recent criminal trial experience as a called and practicing lawyer in Canada.
- Crown Counsel Level 3: Counsel in their 12th year of call or greater, with a minimum of 5 years’ recent criminal trial experience as a called and practicing lawyer in Canada.

**Preference may be given to applicants with**:

- Experience working with other lawyers and professional staff in teams.
- Experience working on large, lengthy prosecutions or designated major cases.
- Experience with disclosure law and practice.
- Experience with the Litigation Management System, Ringtail.
- Experience arguing complex issues including novel Charter issues.
- Experience with Vetrovec witnesses.
- Experience in defending wire, search warrants, and production orders.
- Experience in conducting criminal jury trials.

**Proviso**:

- Travel is a requirement. Transportation arrangements must meet operational requirements of the ministry.

**About this Position**:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week as per the Telework Agreement.
This position is included in the Crown Counsel Association. Membership in the Association is mandatory and is not considered "excluded" although excluded from BCGEU membership.
