This 12‑month role supports schools that offer pre‑kindergarten classrooms, providing professional learning support to improve teacher and assistant knowledge, skills, and dispositions for high‑quality learning environments. Overview This position is responsible for supporting Hawaii Department of Education schools offering pre‑kindergarten classrooms. The teacher provides professional learning support and assistance that leads to improvements in the knowledge, skills, practices and dispositions of pre‑kindergarten teachers and educational assistants, resulting in high‑quality learning opportunities for children and families. Responsibilities and Duties Develop and provide professional learning experiences within specific inquiry areas related to teacher roles, child development and learning, quality interactions, curriculum, instruction, assessment, and family engagement. Use evidence‑based practices consistent with adult learning principles, structured to promote connections between research, theory, and practice. Support educators by providing or to early childhood professional resources and information aligned with teachers’ growth plans and inquires. Act as liaison between schools and the pre‑kindergarten program office, coordinating communication and professional development activities. Collaborate with the team to establish program goals, develop implementation plans, evaluate the program, and coordinate related work with colleagues. Prepare reports as required and participate in action research, professional learning communities, work groups, or projects that advance the pre‑kindergarten program and the early childhood state strategic plan. Drive to schools and interisland travel to support teachers and professional development efforts. Qualifications Completed a State Approved Teacher’s Education Program (SATEP) – mandatory for this teacher position. Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in early childhood education or child development is preferred. Minimum of 6 years of experience as an early childhood teacher, with experience working with adult learners. Knowledge of child development and learning principles, developmentally appropriate practice, curriculum design, formative assessment processes, data analysis, family engagement, and child observation/documentation. Coaching, mentoring and team‑building skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking, active listening, and summarization. Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment, manage multiple tasks, and collaborate with team members, legislators, department directors, and stakeholder groups. Valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit upon hire; if hired without a completed SATEP, a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license and demonstrate progress toward licensing requirements. Compensation and Benefits Compensation: 12‑month teachers receive the applicable Bargaining Unit 05 12‑month salary schedule. 21 days of paid sick leave, 14 days of paid vacation, and state/federal holidays. Health insurance: State may cover part of premiums for medical, drug, vision, and adult dental plans. Group life insurance, optional Premium Conversion Plan, Flexible Spending Accounts, and TSA (Tax Shelter Annuity) for eligible employees. Retirement plan contributions for employees meeting credit and age requirements. Temporary disability insurance, social security, workers' compensation, and union & collective bargaining rights through the Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association. Payday on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month. New employees may expect the first paycheck within the first 3 pay periods of their start date. Application Process Applicants must complete a bachelor's degree or higher by the effective start date and must not currently be enrolled in a State Approved Teacher’s Education Program unless completing one by the end of the semester.
