Family Navigator

This position is responsible for supporting self-identifying indigenous families involved in the child welfare system, as well as providing early intervention and prevention supports services. This position plays an integral role in promoting emotionally and spiritually healthy children, families, and communities by offering support through provided programs and one-on-one support.
Education and Experience:
- Social Service Worker Diploma, Indigenous Human Services Diploma, Social Work Diploma, Bachelor Degree in Social Work, Child & Youth Care, and/or equivalent combination of training, education and experience
- 1+ years of experience navigating and supported Indigenous children and families in care of MCFD
- Experience working within northern indigenous communities and/or non-profit organizations
Required:
- A valid Class 5 BC drivers’ licence and acceptable drivers abstract required
- A clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector search, with results acceptable to childcare regulations
Role and Responsibilities:
- Provides advocacy, early intervention, and prevention supports to indigenous families who are involved or at-risk of involvement with child welfare systems
- Promotes emotionally and spiritually healthy children, families, and communities by offering supports through programs and one-on-one supports
- Connect and collaborate with appropriate referral sources, primarily MCFD
- Carries out intake and assessment of client’s needs through a trauma-informed lens
- Develops and carries out client-centered wellness and/or family plans
- Works collaboratively with diverse professionals and identified client support systems
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date case files and contact logs
- Work with local resources to eliminate barriers and support family wellness
- Coordinates and facilitates health and wellness community workshops
- Must maintain a high level of confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of Nenan Deh zaa Deh Zona Family Services Society
- Performs all other duties and responsibilities in accordance with Nenan policies, standards, and procedures, and as directed by the Family Services Manager
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the diverse cultures, histories and traditions of Treaty 8 First Nations, Indigenous and Metis peoples of northeastern BC
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including active listening and conflict management
- Ability to participate in collaborative decision-making and cultivating a positive team environment
- A strong understanding of the Child, Family & Community Services Act, alternative dispute resolution processes, court processes, and associated policies
- Awareness of the impacts of colonization and generational trauma affecting Indigenous communities
- Awareness of the dynamics of active and ongoing addiction, abuse, family violence, neglect, grief, mental health, healing and recovery
- Strong awareness in the value of harm reduction practices
- Familiarity with program planning, development and evaluation
- Knowledge and consistent implementation of ethics and boundaries
- Demonstrated skills in report writing and documentation
- Ability to work independently and be part of a collaborative team
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Location: Position is based in Fort St John but company-paid travel within the northeastern BC region is required.
