We are hiring a Director, HSE to join our team supporting the Green Line LRT project The Green Line LRT (light rail transit) Project is the largest infrastructure investment in Calgary’s history. At 10-kms, it comes with $6.2 billion in commitments from the Government of Canada, Government of Alberta and The City of Calgary. The Green Line LRT is designed to be both a transit system and a platform for future city building opportunities. It encourages redevelopment and investment in Calgary businesses and communities.

The successful candidate will report to the Executive Director, Construction, Green Line project. The purpose of this role is to support the Green Line project in achieving top-tier HSE results. This involves interfacing across all project teams to establish solid relationships, provide leadership to an HSE team and guidance to the HSE resources, audit specific projects, conduct training, evaluate systems, analyze safety-related data, and develop programs and processes for the continued improvement of HSE performance, organizing safety promotions and competitions and enrolling in national safety competitions such as Canada Safest Employers Nominate, Canada's Safest Employers Awards. This role will be based in Calgary, AB.

Your role within the team:

  • Demonstrate professional behavior that always represents Green Line LRT Project values and standards with unwavering ethical principles.
  • Collaborate with operations and project leadership teams to assess current and future HSE support and staffing needs, including maintaining workforce plans to ensure HSE support and staffing needs are met.
  • Provide leadership to HSE teams to outline HSE strategy, plans and initiatives, and to continuously develop a high performing HSE team.
  • Establish and maintain HSE project standards and requirements in collaboration with the stakeholders across the project and project sites.
  • Oversee the Green Line LRT HSE team and regularly meet with the Leadership teams to discuss project priorities and upcoming initiatives.
  • Perform health and safety, and environmental inspections and corporate compliance audits to ensure contractors are compliant with laws and good industrial practice and recommend corrective actions and follow up on their implementation.
  • Monitor and evaluate contractors’ health, safety and environmental programs and procedures to ensure conformity with regulatory and corporate requirements.
  • Provide HSE advice and coaching to project and construction managers.
  • Develop and deploy HSE training programs aiming to improve HSE performance through education and awareness at all levels.
  • Ensure coordination and/or participation in incident investigations and identify root causes and preventive and corrective measures.
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of HSE procedures, programs and manuals.
  • Provide guidance in interpreting and applying City of Calgary Green Line standards, Canadian and provincial occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Organize Safety Promotions, competitions for contractors and participate in Citywide, Province or National Safety Competitions.
  • Review Method Statements, Lifting Plans, Evacuation Plans and other work procedures developed by Contractors to ensure compliance with laws and safety.

The ideal candidate:

  • College or University degree in Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety and/or an applicable applied science or acceptable combination.
  • Previous experience leading a team of HSE professionals and technicians on large scale (300+ trades, technicians and professionals) infrastructure projects valued at greater than $1.5 billion.
  • Minimum 20 years of experience in occupational health and safety including health and safety on large, complex construction projects.
  • Minimum of 15 years in a safety manager position with at least 10 years experience managing safety managers and coordinating with contractor’s safety managers to ensure compliance with good industrial safety practice and laws.
  • Extensive knowledge of safe work practices and in-depth work experience in training, conducting incident analysis, writing technical reports, managing statistics and presenting to senior managers.
  • Extensive knowledge of implementation and operation with recognized Health and Safety and Environmental Management Systems (OHSAS 18001, ISO 45001, ISO 14001, CSA Z1000, etc.).
  • Extensive knowledge of government health and safety regulations and Standards.
  • Establish credibility with all stakeholders internally and externally.
  • Capacity to adapt rapidly to various projects and work environments.
  • Demonstrates effective listening skills and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Strong people leadership skills demonstrated by treating others with dignity and respect, building and valuing a diverse team, maintaining a psychologically safe work environment, and fostering a culture of accountability and strong performance.
  • Canadian CRSP or CSSE designation or CSP.
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills with the ability to effectively influence and gain support from contractors, managers and workers in achieving HSE goals.
  • Ability to manage high pressure and sensitive situations with diplomacy and tact.
  • Interact effectively with diverse stakeholders and can adjust communication style to suit the situation and audience.
