WHAT YOU WILL DO

Reporting to the Executive Director and as part of the Senior Leadership Team, the Director, Finance and Operations is responsible and accountable for the overall financial and operational leadership and management of the SLF and ensures organizational effectiveness through sound financial and operational practices, and accountability for office administration, information technology, and human resources. The Director of Finance and Operations is responsible for supporting fiscal and strategic planning, the directing, controlling, and reporting of financial resources of the organization, and ensuring that the SLF is compliant with CRA regulations, legal requirements and accounting standards. The Director focuses on improving operations and business practices, managing systems and technology, and ensuring that human resource policies and practices nurture a thoughtful, feminist organizational culture.

Ensure the Foundation’s policies and procedures are fully compliant with CRA requirements, the Income Tax Act, and Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI).Ensure ongoing compliance with the Imagine Canada Standards Program in order to maintain the Foundation’s accreditation.Oversee cash management, funds and reserves, including cash flow, banking relationships, investments and securities.Supervise and lead the administration of estate gifts.

Operations Management, Information Technology and Human Resources

  • Responsible and accountable for the smooth running of all business operations with the Administration Team, through strong and secure infrastructure, a safe and healthy office workplace, and support for remote working
  • Identify best practices and improve internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities – specifically, support improved information flow, business processes and organizational planning.
  • Negotiate and manage lease and all insurance policies
  • Responsible for ensuring IT, systems and tools support organizational needs
  • Ensure strong policies and practices are in place to support the people and culture of the organization and ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations.

Organizational Leadership and Planning

  • As part of the Senior Leadership team, contribute to the stability and growth of the Foundation and the achievement of the organizational strategic plan
  • Lead the roll out of the organization’s annual planning process, determining timelines, processes and tools to support planning within and across departments in line with the strategic plan
  • Lead the development of a multi-year finance and business operations strategy
  • Lead a team of professional employees and external consultants using a supportive and collaborative approach
  • Assist the Executive Director in overall Board governance matters and act as a staff liaison to the Foundation’s Finance & Audit Committee

WHAT WE LOOK FOR

  • 10+ years of related experience, most recently at a senior management or executive level in Accounting/Finance, and Operations or related field, preferably in the not-for-profit sector and in support of grant making and fundraising.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian charity regulations and the accounting standards for Canadian not-for-profit organizations
  • High degree of knowledge and experience of budgeting, forecasting and risk management tools
  • Broad experience with the full range of business functions and systems related to charity operations, including IT systems and human resources.
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge and accounting software, ideally with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central
  • Experience with Global Affairs Canada financial reporting is an asset.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors
  • Excellent ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into organizational planning
  • Strong team leadership and interpersonal skills and demonstrable appreciation of diversity and inclusion
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills, including project management, time-management and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Excellent ability to communicate with warmth, professionalism and clarity, in writing and in person
  • Personal commitment to the values of feminism, social justice, solidarity, collaboration and gender equality
  • Understanding of issues around HIV and AIDS an asset
