Calgary, Canada The Institute for Performance and Learning Full time

OVERVIEW

We are seeking an experienced Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) to join our Calgary-based HR team, reporting directly to the Director of Human Resources. In this role, you will blend strategic insight with practical execution to develop and maintain high-performing teams throughout the organization. You will build strong, trusting relationships with your designated business units, driving talent strategies that align with our company’s goals. Your expertise will be key in advising leaders on performance optimization, employee relations, engagement, talent development, and more. Additionally, you will provide targeted support to leadership in managing a unionized environment. This role is essential in cultivating a vibrant team culture that drives our success.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

General Overview

  • Partner with senior leadership by developing a deep understanding of key business priorities and continuously support leaders in achieving their business goals. You will partner to build and execute a talent strategy that enables and contributes to attaining these goals. You will consult with senior leadership to influence and advise on barriers to success, driving proactive solutions that support building a high-performance environment.
  • You will guide a team of people leaders—ranging in seniority—on executing talent management practices, such as organizational design, performance management, change management, retention and engagement, and succession planning.
  • You will lead by example, supporting a positive work environment with strong values and a high-touch employee experience. You will proactively identify cultural hot spots and areas for improvement.
  • You will collaborate with People Operations, Organizational Effectiveness, Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards, and leverage cross-functional knowledge to enable and empower a high-performing team.
  • In collaboration with subject matter experts, you will configure training resources for management, organize annual training initiatives, facilitate, and monitor in-house training programs.
  • You will partner with peers across the HR Business Partnership team to establish operating principles and best practices for a growing organization.

Employee and Labour Relations

  • As the go-to person for various employee and people leader challenges, you will collaborate with peers and navigate complex employee relation matters promptly and sensitively, supporting people leaders and employees through resolution.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Federal and Provincial Employment Standards and Human Rights legislation to maintain a fair and legally compliant work environment. Additionally, provide guidance on all BURNCO and client policies and procedures to help foster a consistent and equitable workplace culture.
  • Conduct thorough investigations into employee grievances or complaints, develop actionable recommendations, and follow through on decided actions to resolve issues effectively.
  • Participate in collective bargaining negotiations and procedures, including assisting in developing Collective Bargaining Mandates, drafting proposals, reviewing contract terminology, and suggesting additional rules and regulations as necessary.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with union representatives, fostering open communication and collaboration to address employee concerns and promote a harmonious work environment.
  • Manage any grievances or other dispute resolution processes to support people leaders and employees through resolution.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE FROM YOU

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources Management or post-secondary education at college or university level, with a focus on Human Resources or Labour Relations and/or a combination of experience and education.
  • 7 to 10 years of experience in the field of Human Resources, with a minimum of 5 years as an HR Business Partner/Advisor/Consultant with extensive expertise advising and supporting functional leaders and bridging people programs and business needs.
  • Experience in Labour Relations and working in a multi-union environment is a compelling asset.
  • You are a true partner and contributor, working alongside your internal clients and empowering them with the tools, strategies, resources, and project plans to meet business goals. You prioritize building and nurturing ongoing relationships, earning trust, and influencing without authority. You are a critical thinker driven by curiosity, asking intelligent questions to obtain information, identify root causes, and determine business solutions.
  • You can identify gaps or problems and propose and execute solutions, ensuring adoption and engagement. You can take the initiative and see it through from project plan to rollout, meeting deliverables, budget and timing, seamlessly adapting to changes in priorities, and shifting your focus when necessary.
  • You have outstanding professional written, verbal, and presentation skills. You can navigate conflict, manage stressful situations, mediate, and facilitate discussions at the senior leadership level. You can work across teams and with any stakeholder level.
  • You genuinely appreciate and actively promote diverse experiences and backgrounds. You have a proven ability to influence and drive change, and you are interested in understanding others, hearing their perspectives, and addressing their concerns.
  • Solid understanding of Employment and Human Rights legislation across Canadian jurisdictions, Human Resources policies and procedures, Compensation and Benefits.
  • You are data-driven and able to draw deep insights from your analysis. You are highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and have exposure working with a HRIS. UKG experience would be an asset.
  • Ability to travel to various locations within Western Canada; MUST have a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle.
