ABOUT THE COMPANY

Main Street Project offers supportive housing to individuals experiencing homelessness at two dedicated locations: Mainstay and the Bell. Employing a holistic approach rooted in harm reduction and housing-first philosophies, our dedicated staff proactively collaborate with each resident. We provide a range of services, including eviction prevention, harm reduction strategies, life skills development, capacity building, goal setting, and advocacy, all framed within the context of fostering independence and tenant-defined success. Our ultimate goal is to empower our residents to embrace personal growth and development as they work toward achieving a sustainable and fulfilling lifestyle.

MSP recently introduced a Managed Alcohol Program (MAP) at the Bell Hotel, which provides managed doses of alcohol to support those with problematic substance use stabilize and access supports and services. Part of the MAP program is to provide community-building support to those involved in the MAP program as well as the rest of the Bell hotel.

JOB SUMMARY

The Community Connecting Coordinator functions as a part of the leadership team in providing staffing and management support to all employees while maintaining the core values of MSP regarding harm reduction, choice, equity, and diversity to encourage individuals’ capacity building. The Coordinator provides both administrative support (MAP tracking, evaluation, administration oversights) and implements supports and services designed to assist individuals in meeting their basic needs, ensuring their safety and well-being are key factors in providing a sustainable living culture.

The Community Connecting Coordinator will be responsible for supporting those in the MAP program with connections and community supports. They will also be responsible for organizing and implementing programming and supports at the Bell hotel, including Arts, Sports, recreation, outings, and more. The CCC will work with the Indigenous Relations team and Skabe to ensure supports and access to cultural ceremonies, medicines, and other programs are available for the tenants of the Bell hotel.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

MAP Programming

  • Support the MAP program, including the development of policy, supporting the safe and successful transition of tenants, and maintaining a positive, safe, successful housing and work environment.
  • Ongoing MAP duties (approximately 2 to 3 hours per day)
  • Daily data collection and entry, including compiling narratives from TOCs and progress notes
  • Pre-measuring daily alcohol medicine
  • Weekly supply inventory and ordering (cups, alcohol, juice, snacks, etc.)
  • Weekly alcohol audits
  • Receiving MAP orders (MBLL deliver, Pratt's, etc.)

Leadership & Administrative Duties

  • Exercise good judgment and decision-making as the final authority on shift.
  • Provide, coordinate, and implement housing crisis prevention and resolution protocol as needed.
  • Debrief with the team after each incident.
  • Attend and plan mandatory staff meetings, workshops, and training sessions.
  • Model respectful workplace behaviors.
  • Communicate effectively with staff at all levels of the Agency, demonstrating appropriate negotiating skills in an effort to find a resolution to workplace conflict.
  • Build effective workplace relationships to achieve job and program success.
  • Monitor ongoing work, identify problems, and make recommendations for continuous improvements of procedures and policies.
  • Overall supervision of housing daily operations, coordinate move-ins for community members entering housing, adhering to established protocols and working with external partners.
  • Engage in consultation, case management, coordination, and active support for programming activities aimed at facilitating successful housing opportunities for residents in both transitional and permanent housing arrangements.
  • Coordinate and assist participants in planning, problem-solving, and addressing immediate needs, including providing food, water, clothing, and other items essential for successful housing.
  • Coordinate and maintain cleanliness of the program area by following routine cleaning schedules each shift.
  • Collaborate with case managers to enhance support work and care plans in achieving successful housing solutions.
  • Collect all monthly statistical information, MIS stats, MSP onsite Home care stats, and other program-related stats; check for accuracy of all data collected.
  • Report stats in a timely manner.
  • Prepare monthly statistical reports as outlined by the Program Manager/Director.

Compliance:

  • MSP policies and procedures – hold staff accountable.
  • Correct staff on policy administration when and where appropriate (including medication administration processes, support worker job responsibilities, MSP homecare job responsibilities, etc.).
  • PPE Audits – conduct daily personal protective equipment (PPE) audits on the correct use.
  • Maintain records of all site issues/incidents exhibiting unethical and unprofessional business interactions.
  • Coordinate and implement regular floor checks, onsite home care services, weekly room inspections, and consistent shift well-being checks.
  • Health & Safety – develop a safe working environment; ensure employees follow safe work practices and MSP standard operating procedures.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in the field of addictions and mental health is considered an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to build, collaborate, and maintain relationships with external partners.
  • Compassion for working with individuals who use substances and experience mental health issues.
  • Ability to work with a participant-centered care philosophy.
  • Knowledge of the effects of poverty and the determinants of health.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to apply Harm Reduction, Trauma-Informed Care, Anti-Oppressive, and Housing First philosophies in their day-to-day support of community members.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture.
  • Able to contribute to a culturally safe environment for staff and participants.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the principles of the TRC Calls to Action, MMIWG Calls to Justice, and UNDRIP.
  • Indigenous languages considered an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office & online databases.
  • Ability to assess crisis, de-escalate, and work in a crisis situation.
  • Lived experience related to the role is considered an asset.

Conditions of Employment

  • Employees must present a current Criminal Record Check for employment at MSP.
  • Employees must have current CPR & basic first aid.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands required for the role including being on your feet for long periods of time, lifting up to 50 lbs, and cleaning duties (bending, reaching, push/pulling, crouching).
  • Possibly exposure to biohazards including but not limited to blood, bodily fluids, and syringes.
  • Ability to work with individuals who use substances and/or experience mental health issues.
  • Ability to provide support in high-intensity incidents including but not limited to medical emergencies and aggressive individuals.
  • Ability to commute to work and around other Housing facilities.
  • Comfortable working in an environment where Indigenous ceremonies and practices are actively taking place, including Smudging.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Clear Vulnerable Sector Search, Diver’s abstract, and a Clear Adult Abuse Registry Checks are required.
