Position Summary

This position is funded by the federal Canada Summer Jobs program to provide employment experience to youth between the age of 15 and 30 years old. The Research Support Officer will support Refugee 613’s community outreach work by working closely with the local Community Outreach Coordinator to undertake a special project to map Ottawa’s newcomer communities and diverse language groups. This includes assisting the Refugee 613 team in developing a plan for assessing information and service needs and identifying existing community supports and their unique eligibility criteria

Main Responsibilities:
  • Assist in developing and implementing a project plan for compiling data for a comprehensive mapping of immigrant communities in Ottawa, with an emphasis on communities with refugee and/or racialized populations
  • Conduct a literature review and engage stakeholders and community leaders to compile data on community sizes, languages, leadership, contact information, etc.
  • Support Refugee 613 team to develop an outreach plan to identify information assets and challenges of refugee communities
  • Assist in preparation of reports, briefings and infographics to share learning with Refugee 613 team, community members and stakeholders
  • Administrative tasks as required, including meeting coordination, ad hoc project-specific research etc.
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned
  • Demonstrate a commitment to OCISO’s culture of respect approach

Mandatory Terms (set by funder):

  • Age between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment
  • Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act [S.C. 2001. c. 27]
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations

Please note: International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

Qualifications:
  • Studies or training in social policy, human geography, communications, law or related fields
  • Excellent analytical, research and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in collecting, organizing, and manipulating qualitative data
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, particularly with marginalized populations
  • Highly motivated, creative and organized
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written knowledge of English and French required; proficiency in other languages considered an asset
  • Ability to work with a small, mission-driven team in a sensitive, respectful manner
  • Experience in working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Strong work ethic and ability to multi-task and work independently
  • Proficiency with the full MS Office Suite, particularly Excel, as well as Google Suite and Mail Chimp

Languages required for this job:

English and French

Salary: $15.50/hour
