We are seeking to add a General Superintendent to our team.
Position Title: General Superintendent
Reports to: Operations Manager
Department: Projects
Location: Richmond, BC
Position Summary
The General Superintendent is responsible for pre-job planning in partnership with Project Managers coordinating crews and equipment and overseeing field operation crews. This position is well suited to someone with over 10 years of experience in construction projects, previous experience in the operation of heavy equipment, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Operations
- Oversee field operation crews, including hiring, performance management, and career development daily.
- Coordinate proper sizing of crews through ebbs and flows of project resource demands.
- Coordinate the dispatch of crews and equipment up to and including the coordination of rental equipment, and in-house and third-party trucking services to effectively conduct daily operations.
- Support field-based supervisors to ensure they are competent in input of field data capture and job costing.
- Perform Superintendent duties at multiple job sites simultaneously.
- Help to identify areas of work outside of contracted scope.
- Assist in the development and project estimation, and proposal preparation.
- Always be accessible by phone.
Project Manager collaboration
- Collaborate with Project Managers for pre-job planning.
- Provide leadership in safety by ensuring all company, client and legislated safety policies and procedures are met or exceeded.
- Assist the field-based supervisors in job set setup, work planning and execution, ensure the field-based supervisor is fully executing and complying with the project scope in partnership with the Project Managers.
- Interact with customer field representatives to ensure that commitments are being met and solicit customer feedback to improve service.
Safety
- Participate in all HSE investigations.
- Collaborate and participate with HSE team in all aspects of safety and drive safety culture daily.
- Driving KBL culture to all field staff.
- Ensure all necessary project safety provisions and procedures are implemented on each project.
People and Culture
- Work closely with People and Culture in talent acquisition during the recruitment cycle and hiring process and develop a talent pipeline for upcoming field employment opportunities.
- Manage and provide leadership to support the responsibilities of direct reports while supporting development opportunities.
- Develop succession plans for all employees.
- Improve employee engagement scores year over year.
- Review and manage employee wages. Build and present business cases for wage adjustments and present to upper management.
- Application of disciplinary procedures, when applicable.
Physical Requirements
- Must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time.
Work Environment
- The position will be based out of our Richmond, British Columbia office.
- Travel to field sites will be required. This includes remote locations.
Abilities/ Experience
- 10+ years of related construction projects with a post-secondary degree/diploma or combination of education and related experience.
- Strong organization skills with the ability to effectively prioritize multiple responsibilities, and work within a fast-paced environment.
- Experience successfully managing a team.
- Possess a strong understanding of at least one key discipline area: Civil Earthworks, Pipeline and Demolition, Construction, or QA/QC.
- Previous experience in Heavy Equipment Operation (Excavator, Dozer, Rock Trucks).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office with a technical proficiency to work within company systems.
- Proficient skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams are a MUST.
- Ability to present scheduling to management on a weekly basis.
- Ability to read, review and understand technical drawings and specifications.
- Ability to read, interpret other documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals and contracts.
- Ability to travel and work flexible hours, as workload requires.
- Strong client and company facing communication skills.
- Onboarding and offboarding experience.
- Professional conflict resolution skills/experience.
- Implementing performance improvement plans.
