Duties:

The Adult Basic Education Department at VIU is offering STSK 068 in-community in Powell River (with Tla'amin Nation) in Fall 2024.

Duties include: instruct course; prepare course materials; provide individual and group instruction; provide student support; design and implement student evaluation, grading and record keeping; liaise with program coordinator; participate as an active member of the instructional faculty. Course delivery will be face-to-face with support provided in person and remotely. Course will be taught in community at the Education portable in the Tla'amin village of t̓išosəm. Instructor needs to be prepared to teach in this environment.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success. Successful candidates will participate in activities outside the classroom including student support and department committees.

Note:

Teaching Expertise: Applicants should be prepared to provide and deliver a short sample lesson or teaching demonstration on a topic that will be provided before the interview. During the presentation, the applicant should expect to be questioned on aspects of the presentation by the interview panel members.

The interview will contain at least one course-content question that the applicant has not been able to prepare ahead of time. The interview panel will use the responses to gauge the applicant's subject knowledge, classroom management, and teaching expertise.


Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in a relevant discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and relevant teaching experience. In order to teach in subject area, applicants must provide transcripts demonstrating a minimum of 24 credits in the identified subject area.

Demonstrated digital competencies and proven experience teaching with remote, online, and face-to-face delivery.

Experience teaching a variety of student success skills to adult learners, including active listening, critical thinking, personal management skills, study skills, test-taking skills, and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver courses / lessons that incorporate a wide range of teaching strategies and address the needs of adult learners with various learning styles and abilities.

Demonstrated understanding and experience in working with Tla'amin Nation and/or other Indigenous communities and ability to integrate Indigenous perspectives. Experience teaching from a holistic approach. Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning, problem-solving skills, organizational and time management skills.

Knowledge of, and the ability to access, institutional resources. Familiarity with VIU's courses and programs. Responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds of adult upgrading student populations.


Preferred Qualifications:

Teacher training/certification. Understanding/experience with trauma-informed teaching practices. Be of Indigenous ancestry.
