Duties:

Vancouver Island University'stiwšɛmawtxʷCampus is seeking an instructor to deliver the Mentorship & Study Skills course (MSSK 001) as part of the Education Assistant and Community Support Worker (EACS) Certificate Program being delivered in the Tla'amin community oft̓išosəm beginning in fall 2024. This position will be based int̓išosəm with some hours completed on campus and/or remotely.

The MSSK instructor delivers the MSSK Study Block (four hours per week) and provides additional small group and individualized tutoring and mentorship outside Study Block hours to support student success. The MSSK instructor will help students stay organized and on top of program requirements; interpret instructions and complete assignments for all EACS program courses; respond to instructor feedback; address areas for improvement; develop effective learning practices; and troubleshoot any problems or challenges that arise. As a non-credit student support course, MSSK 001 does not include content delivery, assignments or assessments.

Reporting to the Campus Administrator,tiwšɛmawtxʷCampus, this position receives additional supervision and support from thetiwšɛmawtxʷCampus Program Coordinator, Professional Development and Training, and the Tla'amin Nation Education Department. The MSSK Instructor position is responsible for:

  • Coordinating and delivering the MSSK 001 Study Block;
  • Scheduling small group and one-on-one tutoring/mentorship sessions with students in person and/or virtually as necessary;
  • Fostering and modeling effective organization skills;
  • Monitoring program deadlines to ensure student assignments are submitted on time;
  • Helping students develop/improve relevant learning strategies and study skills;
  • Providing additional student support in response to individual needs/challenges as needed;
  • Liaising with program instructors;
  • Working collaboratively with program staff, instructors and other colleagues at VIU and Tla'amin Nation to support student success; and
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success. Successful candidates will participate in activities outside the classroom including student support and department committees.


Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant subject area from an appropriately accredited institution.Minimum three years recent and related experience.A combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Technology competencies relevant to the role

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in a relevant field
  • Experience working with Tla'amin Nation and/or other Indigenous communities
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's license (and a confirmed satisfactory driving record)
  • Demonstrated post-secondary course planning / curriculum development
  • Familiarity with VIU's systems, policies and procedures
  • Training in trauma-informed practice
