Position Overview

The Controller contributes to overall financial stability by maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. The Controller is responsible for financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting. They oversee financial controls including: general accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, capital assets and plays a pivotal role in the annual financial statements audit. Working collaboratively with senior management, they contribute to financial strategies and plans for the organization.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this position is based out of Ontario One Call’s head office at 104 Cooper Drive, Guelph. Ontario One Call has a hybrid work model with staff dividing their workweek between in-office and at-home work.

We are currently hiring for this position.

Primary Duties:
  • Manage the preparation of all financial reports, ensuring all monthly reporting of financial statements and other accounting reports are compiled in a timely manner.
  • Ensure all accounting transactions are promptly journalized in the general ledger(s) including reconciliations of accounts and preparing journal entries, posting entries, and monthly accruals.
  • Ensuring cost centre accounting is established and monthly cost centre reports are published.
  • Maintain and implement robust internal controls and finance policies to ensure good governance over financial accounts and safeguarding of financial assets.
  • Manage, remit, and file reports as required by law for all WSIB, EHT, taxes including HST and income taxes reports and all other required compliance remittances.
  • Provide prompt financial documentation, financial requests, financial working papers, accounting reconciliations, etc. for the external auditor(s), government stakeholders, and Ontario One Call’s members.
  • Collaborate with Leadership to develop and manage the composition of the annual budget and annual cost centre budgets.
  • Perform analysis on actual results and comparing against budget.
  • Comply with all budgetary reporting requirements, including local, provincial, and federal.
  • Contribute to short and long-term business plans, financial outlooks and financial forecasts. Conduct financial analysis to support decision-making processes.
  • Participation on the evolution of finance and accounting projects including implementation of new automated Accounts Payable Workflow, implementation of sub-ledgers, and potential change in general ledger software.
  • Manage and facilitate the annual audited financial statements co-ordination with external auditors.
  • Support the Corporate Finance & Accounting Specialist; including regular meetings/coaching sessions, conducting performance evaluations and identifying and supporting training and development opportunities.
  • Promote a positive workplace culture where information sharing and innovation thrive through mentorship/development of staff and commitment to interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Occasional travel within the province of Ontario (mostly within the GTA) may be required.

Qualifications:
  • Intermediate knowledge with QuickBooks and knowledge of other financial/accounting software is an asset.
  • Expert skill with MS Excel. Willingness to embrace and learn new finance/reporting systems.
  • Expert understanding of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Proven organizational and project management/coordination skills, including the ability to build budgets, develop long term forecasting and conduct financial analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to structure and present information clearly, concisely, and logically.
  • Proficient leadership and employee mentorship/coaching skills.
  • Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills to collaborate tactfully and effectively with Ontario One Call stakeholders and staff.
  • Able to work well under pressure and adaptable to rapid change.
Education & Experience:
  • Post-secondary education in Finance, Economics, Accounting or Business preferred; or a relevant discipline or combination or post-secondary education and experience.
  • CPA or CPA CA is required.
  • 6+ years’ experience working in a similar position in a regulatory or not for profit environment.
  • 5+ years’ experience managing financial budgets.
