Role Responsibilities

The Training Academy (TA) promotes excellence through training and continual professional development by establishing training standards, and in partnership with stakeholders, facilitating the delivery of evidence-based curriculum. The TA is responsible for design, development and delivery of induction training programs to peace officers in Alberta.

As the Firearms Training Coordinator, you will provide oversight and quality assurance of safety and delivery standards for firearms training and instruction. You will identify where and how firearms training integrates with learning objectives of other specialized training areas (control tactics, EVOC, legal, strategic communication). This is achieved through organizing subject matter resources, leading a dedicated committee inclusive of key representation from all stakeholders, and by demonstrating systems thinking. You will be viewed as a subject matter expert in the field and will be relied on to provide mentoring and coaching to instructors and staff.

You will be responsible to provide quality assurance of delivery, ensure standards are upheld, and work with stakeholders to manage instructor qualification and certification to support operational demands can be met. As a team lead coordinating and tracking the activities and qualifications of Firearms Instructors and armorers, you must be sensitive not only to operational requirements of the TA but also those of associated stakeholders. A constant focus on professionalism and safety of personnel in any training capacity is paramount. You will ensure all course curriculums reflect best practices and defined course standards and works with stakeholders and TA Education Services to undertake revisions needed to address evolving operational requirements.

Qualifications

University graduation in a related field plus at least 2 years progressively related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency: A related two-year diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution and four years related experience; or A related one-year certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution and five years related experience. 

Related experience may include but not limited to Sheriff, Fish and Wildlife Officer, Environmental Enforcement Officer or las enforcement operational experience.

Related education may include but not limited to University graduation in a related field, such as a Criminal Justice/Criminology, Policing/Law Enforcement, Social Sciences, Business etc.

The Firearms Training Coordinator must be qualified as a Masters Firearms Instructor or equivalent level of training.

The Firearms Training Coordinator must be competent in all aspects of the duties with Peace Officer authority, including use and application of the Alberta Peace Officer Act, Criminal Code, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms as well as all other Provincial and Federal statutes.

Preference will be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

Current Training Academy or related instructor qualifications (Essential Facilitations, Control Tactics, Firearms, EVOC, First Aid, etc.). Experience in leadership roles/initiatives (Peer Support Program, Field Training Officer, etc.).  Formal training, education and experience instructing using adult learning principles. Contributing to workplace culture through special projects and initiatives. Considerable experience as a Sheriff, Fish and Wildlife Officer or Environmental Enforcement Officer or law enforcement operational experience.
