Role Responsibilities

With a high degree of independence, this position will provide expert leadership and support to the Ministry of Health on the prevention and control of communicable diseases (CD) and outbreaks in Alberta with a focus on rare, emerging, and re-emerging diseases. This position coordinates the development, maintenance and evaluation of notifiable disease guidelines, policies, surveillance reporting and compliance activities. This position will play a lead role in rare/emerging infectious disease policy. This position leads public health subject matter experts and policy lead staff and works closely with the CD Manager and the CD Director.

This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining provincial public health guidelines, policies and surveillance processes for the prevention and control of notifiable diseases in Alberta, with a focus on rare and re-emerging diseases.

This position will oversee development and implementation of the Alberta Health requirements to add new notifiable diseases in Alberta. This includes leading the policy analysis and recommendation of rare or emerging disease threats under the authority of the Public Health Act.

The Manager, CD- Rare and Emerging works closely with colleagues across the Ministry of Health including the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health and the Analytics and Surveillance team.

Qualifications

A related university degree, preferably in Nursing, Health Sciences, Public Health and at minimum 4 years of related experience.

Equivalency : Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education. 

The manager must have experience in the following: 

A minimum of five years working in communicable diseases.  Experience related to the identification and reporting of notifiable diseases included in the Public Health Act and Communicable Diseases Regulation.  Experience with managing complex projects or programs and writing business documents.

 
The following will be considered significant assets: 

Five years of management experience. Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA); OR the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).  Master’s degree in a related field. Experience in strategic planning, policy development, regulation/legislation development.
