**Role Responsibilities**:

- Reporting to the Wildlife Disease Specialist, the Wildlife Disease Technician plays a key supporting role in delivering Alberta’s wildlife disease programs. This position provides the primary program coordination in detecting emerging and established diseases to facilitate effective delivery of services that support diagnostic, surveillance and research activities associated with government and non-government facilities, wildlife officers, veterinary pathologists, scientists and biologists.
- **Responsibilities include**:

- Assisting with post-mortem examinations.
- Collecting samples for routine and research purposes.
- Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment.
- Receiving and shipping of samples.
- Training and providing technical support to wage lab technicians.
- Maintaining lab standard operating procedures.
- Documenting diagnostic results, managing various databases, drafting diagnostic reports, and other administrative tasks.
- Troubleshooting any potential problems to maintain efficiency of the lab.

**Qualifications**:
**Requirements**:

- Two-year technical diploma in a related field such as laboratory research and biotechnology, environmental science, biology or natural resource management.
- Minimum two years of related experience in a diagnostic lab environment.

**Equivalencies**:

- Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

**Assets**:

- Good knowledge and understanding of techniques used in a disease and post mortem laboratory, including but not limited to biosecurity, necropsy investigation, sample collection techniques, health & safety including required PPE, WHMIS.
- Ability to assist with post-mortem examination of wildlife and selection/collection of various tissues.
- Knowledge of WHMIS, OH&S and ISO 17025 principles and its implementation in the laboratory.
- Strong background in parasitology, wildlife anatomy and species identification as well as a basic understanding of wildlife ecology and field survey techniques.
- Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control.
- Experience supervising, leading and/or mentoring team members.
- Demonstrated experience working independently and in a team environment.
- Strong understanding of zoonotic diseases, in particular those associated with wildlife species in Alberta.
- The ability to identify native wildlife species in Alberta.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft software including but not limited to Word and Excel.
- Experience developing and maintaining biological databases.
- Experience operating Class 5 trucks and ATV trailers.
- Standard First aid.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
