The Organization

The Opportunity

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead OMG emergency response, preparedness and recovery programming for OMG departments, affiliates, and citizens through the stages of concept, design, proposal, funding, implementation, and reporting.
  • Develop and implement emergency preparedness and response plans.
  • Coordinate and deliver appropriate emergency preparedness and response training, including print and digital materials.
  • Act as a technical advisor to the OMG departments and affiliates on emergency management issues.
  • Develop and maintain constructive working relationships and partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders including governments, industry, institutions, citizens, and other OMG departments.
  • Set strategic, professional, and departmental goals and objectives in coordination with the OMG Environment and Climate Change Department.
  • Manage operational and fiscal activities of various programs, including developing and implementing project work plans, processes, and procedures, and forecasting within a designated budget.
  • Request and evaluate bids from potential contractors, provide recommendations, and secure appropriate resources to be able to meet goals of projects and initiatives.
  • Manage project contractors and consultants, oversee site plans and contracts, and verify final execution of project work.
  • Draft and/or deliver reports, briefings, speaking notes, and presentations.
  • Manage staffing responsibilities and perform supervisory duties including hiring and training staff, assigning job duties, and developing and overseeing staff work plans.
  • Other duties as required.

Skills & Competencies

  • Experience with community program development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Experience with grant/funding proposals, work plans, and budgeting.
  • Excellent report writing skills, and the ability to produce professional documents and presentations.
  • A proven ability to deal with a high volume of work in a complex environment with multiple demands and critical timelines.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to identify issues and implement creative and strategic solutions to overcome problems.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment and be adaptable and flexible to changing priorities.
  • Experience managing contractors and consultants for multiple sites and projects.
  • Strong cultural and political sensitivity and awareness, with the ability to deal with confidential information.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a proven track record of building collaborative partnerships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including government, industry, and community.
  • Recognized strength in leading and engaging teams and creating a culture that promotes development of individual and organizational capacity.
  • Knowledge of Métis rights, history, culture, and people an asset.
  • Experience working in government or nonprofits an asset.

Qualifications

  • Post Secondary Education and/or Training in Emergency Management or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in the delivery of programming related to safety, emergency response, emergency management, or related field. Volunteer experience in these areas is considered related experience.
  • Experience leading a team is considered an asset.

Other Requirements

  • Position will be based in Edmonton. Applicants outside of Edmonton within Alberta may be considered.
  • Ability to work a regular schedule of Monday
  • Friday, 8:30 AM 4:30 PM, with occasional evenings and weekends. During emergency situations, work hours may extend regular business hours.
  • Travel within and outside of Alberta is a requirement. Travel outside of normal business hours (including weekends) may be required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and operational vehicle.
  • Ability to work remotely in a secure location, maintaining confidentiality, when operating outside of OMG office(s).
