Computational Biology and Software Development Co-op Student

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Co-op Student to join our Computational Biology team at Zymeworks, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery, development, and commercialization of next-generation biotherapeutics.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting computational biology and machine learning tasks related to drug discovery research, including implementing, optimizing, and training large-scale machine learning algorithms and language models.
Key Responsibilities- Design and implement machine learning algorithms for the analysis of large-scale protein datasets.
- Train, validate, and fine-tune machine learning models to extract meaningful patterns and insights from biological data.
- Implement strategies for model validation and performance evaluation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including computational biologists, protein engineers, and software developers, to understand biological problems and contribute to multidisciplinary projects.
- Document code, methodologies, and results comprehensively to facilitate knowledge sharing and reproducibility.
- Present findings and results to both technical and non-technical audiences, fostering effective communication and collaboration across teams.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in computational biology, machine learning, computer science, or a related field.
- Strong programming skills, especially in Python and bash.
- Proven experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, Scikit-Learn) and proficiency in relevant libraries.
- Experience with using large language models.
- Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud) and distributed computing.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to translate biological questions into machine learning solutions.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- General knowledge about protein biochemistry is an asset.
