DescriptionThe Department of Indigenous Engagement in the Office of the Provost & VP Academic is looking for a Project Manager, Indigenous Research & Training. This is a Full-time, Fixed Term position for about 12 months, with the potential for extension.The Project Manager, Indigenous Research and Training will report to the Indigenous Administrative and Research Lead, One Child Every Child. Strong time management, coordination, and ability to work independently are crucial to this role. The Project Manager should be detail-oriented, capable of handling multiple projects, and supporting the progress of Indigenous self-determination and research.The Project Manager will collaborate with the One Child Every Child Indigenous Ways of Knowing Accelerator team in creating training materials for Indigenous research, ethics, and parallel processes. Responsibilities include supporting the involvement of Indigenous communities in child health and research, organizing events, managing budgets, coordinating learning activities, advancing strategic initiatives, and supporting various publications.This position contributes to the ongoing indigenization of the University of Calgary.Summary of Key Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
  • Research and Project Management (50%):
    • Provide research and project management support to the Indigenous Research and Administrative Lead on OCEC projects.
    • Coordinate project activities and schedules, maintain partner connections, and handle logistics.
    • Offer administrative and operational support, including financial reviews and research contract development.
    • Support emerging Indigenous scholars and secure funding for projects.
    • Ensure strategic goals are achieved for the Indigenous Parallel research path.
    • Support initiatives that align with the Indigenous path and accelerator.
    • Assist in developing Indigenous co-led projects and engage with communities.
    • Create effective communications for parallel paths and Indigenous engagement.
Training and Program Development (20%):
  • Lead training material development for OCEC members on research with Indigenous groups.
  • Provide guidance on implementing principles and strategies for Indigenous research.
  • Develop strategies for recruiting and retaining Indigenous scholars.
  • Support Indigenous-led research projects from inception to implementation.
  • Explore program expansion opportunities through various partnerships.
  • Collaborate with Indigenous units for training material development.
  • Oversee curriculum development for Accelerator programs.
Financial management, performance, and reporting (20%):
  • Manage finances for Indigenous research projects and institute activities.
  • Monitor expenditures and ensure budget compliance.
  • Prepare financial reports and expense claims.
  • Provide financial support for the Indigenous Research Path.
  • Advise on efficient business systems utilization and Indigenous protocols.
  • Answer finance and accounting inquiries within the Research Path.
Leadership & People Management (10%):
  • Collaborate on achieving strategic goals and provide HR management.
  • Cultivate relationships with various stakeholders and community partners.
  • Hire research and support staff when necessary.
  • Manage direct reports, including performance reviews and professional development.
  • Participate in operational committees and working groups.
  • Act as a liaison and role model within the Indigenous context.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Undergraduate degree required, master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in Indigenous research, education, or engagement.
  • 3 years' experience in management and administration.
  • Experience in project management and community-based research.
  • Understanding of research practices and Indigenous protocols.
  • Commitment to Indigenous engagement and protocols.
  • Experience in program development and strategic planning.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of University of Calgary's mission and values.
  • Familiarity with relevant policies and protocols.
