Role Summary: Reporting to the Leader of Strategic Relationships within City and Regional Planning, the Indigenous Policy Strategist plays a pivotal role in advancing the Planning and Development Services (PDS) department's initiatives related to Truth & Reconciliation, the City’s Indigenous Policy, and the White Goose Flying report. This position serves as a vital link between PDS staff and Indigenous communities, providing essential project and program management support for Indigenous program activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive research, investigations, and data analysis to bolster the Indigenous program within the PDS department.
  • Foster and manage relationships while guiding culturally sensitive engagement initiatives between PDS personnel and Indigenous rightsholders.
  • Offer project management assistance for PDS's Indigenous program, including scheduling, coordinating meetings and events, maintaining records, and documenting potential risks.
  • Serve as an Indigenous subject matter expert, providing insights to PDS staff and leadership regarding policy research, development, analysis, and engagement opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • A master's degree in Indigenous Studies with a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience, or a master's degree in a related field with at least 3 years of pertinent experience.
  • Proven experience in cultivating and sustaining relationships with Indigenous communities, including both rural and urban settings, as well as Traditional Knowledge Keepers.
  • In-depth knowledge of Indigenous history, culture, ceremonies, and languages pertinent to the Treaty 7 region.
  • Familiarity with city, community, regional, or transportation planning policies, land development processes, climate change strategies, and environmental management is advantageous.
  • Understanding of community or social development, economic development, or archaeological assessment protocols is also beneficial.
  • Strong communication skills, political acumen, and relationship management capabilities are essential for success in this role.
