Nova Scotia Health is the largest provider of health services in Nova Scotia, with some specialized services also offered to clients throughout Atlantic Canada. We're on a mission to achieve excellence in health, healing, and learning through working together, which is reflected in the hospitals, health centres, and community-based programs we operate across the province. Our passionate team of professionals provides a variety of high-quality inpatient and outpatient services including academic, tertiary, and quaternary care, as well as continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.

The OSI Clinic provides specialized mental health assessment and treatment to clients and their families referred by Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and the Department of National Defense (DND), who are experiencing work-related psychological stress and trauma. As a member of an interdisciplinary team, the social worker delivers mental health treatment services to Veterans and their families.

The social worker will be required to:

  • Maintain OSI-specific work load measurement outcome monitoring and data collection
  • Provide education with various OSI stakeholders
  • Maintain contact with the referring VAC case managers, RCMP, and DND in the development of the treatment plans and referrals
  • Utilize OSI supported telehealth services mental health and other distance technologies in the provision of services in outlying communities
  • Work with the Canadian network of OSI clinics, and follow the leadership of the Operational Stress Injury National Network
  • Design and provide program evaluation and satisfaction surveys within OSI clinic guidelines
  • Contribute to research as a part of the national OSI clinic network
  • Work in a manner that is in compliance with VAC standards for OSI clinics

We are looking for a social worker with:

  • A Master's degree in Social Work from a recognized university
  • Registration or eligibility for registration with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW)
  • A minimum of two years related clinical experience
  • Training in evidence-based therapies for PTSD, depression, anxiety disorders, and knowledge of substance misuse
  • Knowledge of mental health best practices, community services, and crisis response
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary service delivery model
  • Experience providing evidence-based trauma-focused therapy
  • Experience working with families and couples
  • Experience in group work
  • Experience providing mental health services on an ongoing outpatient basis
  • Sensitivity to the unique needs of military/police services personnel who are experiencing service-related mental health problems
  • Knowledge of psychiatric rehabilitation principles and practices
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills and ability to establish and maintain good working relations
  • Commitment to Continuous Quality Improvement, Best Practices, and Team Work
  • Effective mentoring and clinical supervision skills to support both the academic role and the clinical practice of other team members
  • Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Willingness to work variable hours and evenings
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
