Irving Shipbuilding Inc. is seeking a Welding Technician. The Welding Technician will support the Welding Engineering Team to develop new welding processes and take the lead of procedure development to support build readiness activities. They will provide practical subject matter expertise and be responsible for supervision of welders during testing activities while supporting the Welding Engineers in collection and collation of the required data. The Welding Technician will work with the Welding Engineering team to assure welding quality and to provide field support to production. The Welding Technician will lead projects to develop welding parameters to enable welding for new applications. The Welding Technician will work with shop floor trades to trouble shoot issues and ensure that productivity is optimized to maintain product quality and project schedule.

This is a permanent full-time role based in Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia. The primary language of work is English. Qualifications:

  • Education: Red Seal in Welding or Technical Diploma in relevant subject
  • Experience: 5+ of Shipbuilding experience
  • The Welding Technician will have an excellent knowledge of FCAW and GTAW, with automatic and mechanized weld experience being desirable
  • Knowledge of weld procedure development in accordance with Lloyds material rules
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office suite, SharePoint, ability to independently learn to operate new technical software packages
  • ASNT Level II in Visual Inspection or similar desirable (CWB L2 or ISO 9712 equivalent)
  • Hold current multi-positional weld qualifications in FCAW and GTAW from CWB, DOL or a ICAS body
  • Shipbuilding / Manufacturing Knowledge related to welding
  • Demonstrate knowledge relating practical aspects of welding and inspection
  • Ability to read and understand specifications and structural and outfit drawings
  • Technical Communication and Influencing Skills
  • Ability to communicate technical information in accessible format
  • Organizational skills
