Instructional Assistant, Education and Career Planning Program

Support students in achieving their educational and career goals by providing guidance, resources, and services in a diverse and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide support and assistance to students with diverse needs, including those with learning disabilities and anxiety.
  • Manage student intake, book individual information sessions, and liaise with instructors to ensure clear communication and information flow.
  • Respond to student inquiries, provide information, advice, and guidance, and refer students to instructors, college services, and external agencies as needed.
  • Support students during the registration process, including liaison with admissions, financial aid, registration, and other student services.
  • Communicate regularly with registered students, provide detailed instructions, and support their online and self-learning participation.
  • Design and provide orientation to learning management software, online classroom software, and resume-writing workshops.
  • Assist instructors in facilitating activities, coordinating group work, and modeling key objectives, as well as assessing student engagement with self-learning content.
  • Perform objective marking, troubleshoot technical difficulties, and refer unresolved issues to the Centre for Excellence in Teaching & Learning or ITS.
  • Organize and administer class and guest speaker video recordings, record online class presentations, and upload recordings to applicable software.
  • Complete minor updates to curriculum information, program learning tools, and news in D2L, as requested by Supervisor or Instructor.
  • Organize administrative arrangements for guest speakers, support guest speakers with orientation in classroom software, and monitor and update the content of the EDCP website pages.
  • Contribute to the EDCP marketing team, generate and present ideas for marketing the program, and collect student data for analysis.
  • Prepare for, attend, and participate in team, departmental, and special project meetings, and perform assigned follow-up tasks.
Qualifications:
  • Two years of relevant post-secondary education, including English and computer courses, plus two years of relevant experience working with adult learners in employment and career counselling.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse student population, including adults with learning disabilities, sensitivity towards learners with multi-barrier student issues, and the ability to respond to the needs of learners.
  • Proven excellent communication and presentation skills, demonstrating confidentiality, tact, and discretion.
  • Demonstrated time-management, multitasking, and organizational skills, including the ability to adapt and work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, creative thinking, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of College structure, resources, and services available to support students.
  • Advanced level knowledge and skill with personal computers and software applications, including the MS Office suite.
  • Facility with demonstrating software to a diverse student population as a group and individually.
  • Proficient in cloud-based online/synchronous learning management software, such as D2L, using software features and functions.
  • Proficient with synchronous classroom software (e.g. Blackboard Collaborate) for basic troubleshooting.
  • Basic knowledge of video editing software, such as Kaltura.
  • Excellent attention to detail while working in a sometimes-high volume and changing student-centered learning environment.
