Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

Job Summary

Population Data BC (PopData) is a multi-university, data and education resource facilitating interdisciplinary research on the determinants of human health, well-being and development.

We support secure research access to individual-level, de-identified longitudinal data on 5.4 million residents living in British Columbia, linking data across various sectors such as health, education, early childhood development, workplace and the environment.

We are a key member of the International Population Data Linkage Network, through which we have promoted international research collaborations and fostered working groups on privacy and access to data. PopData is also one of 14 centres that comprise Health Data Research Network Canada (HDRN Canada), a research-enabling, distributed network that supports multi-regional, person-focused research.

The Network Coordination and Operations (NCO) team for Health Data Research Network Canada (HDRN Canada) and the SPOR Canadian Data Platform (CDP), the first initiative of HDRN Canada, are based at Population Data BC.

The Communications Coordinator will develop communications products for HDRN Canada, including report design and layout, graphic design, audiovisual design, and writing for various formats (web, print, social) and audiences (internal to HDRN Canada, public-facing, etc.).

Organizational Status

The Communications Coordinator reports to HDRN Canada's Strategic Communications Manager, and is part of HDRN Canada's Communications Team.

HDRN Canada's Communications Team are staff members of Population Data BC, which is a part of the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia.

Work Performed

  • Contributes to the HDRN Canada communications strategy by providing input based on experience and expertise, in consultation with the Strategic Communications Manager
  • Develops communications materials for dissemination both internally and externally, including articles, reports, promotional material, infographics, web and print visuals
  • Cultivates a common look and feel for all communications materials, ensuring accuracy, professionalism, clarity and consistency
  • Facilitates knowledge exchange between network member institutions
  • Liaises with stakeholders and experts internally and externally to assess and evaluate needs, and develops communication materials resulting from consultation with stakeholders/experts
  • Executes communications and knowledge mobilization strategies in collaboration with stakeholders, including through web, social media, and other digital channels
  • Works with the Communications Team to develop and disseminate related communications and promotional materials that support awareness of various research and data resources, as well as training (e.g. website content, marketing materials, social media, reports, and plain language summaries)
  • Disseminates research findings through various knowledge translation activities; takes research products/findings/evidence and translates them for the appropriate audience
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of relevant communications standards, products, and tools
  • Develops domain knowledge in the field of health data and cultivates a broad understanding of researcher access to data in BC, Canada and around the world to support a range of design and communication tasks and projects
  • Performs other duties as required

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Communications Coordinator must exercise outstanding tact, discretion, initiative and judgment at all times. Actions carried out by the incumbent directly affect the ability of PopData and HDRN Canada to carry out their strategic objectives.

This role will work under strict confidentiality because of the nature of data held by PopData and its partners. Any breach in data security would place the reputation and future of PopData and its partner organizations at risk.

Accuracy and attention to detail are extremely important because any errors in communication will have a significant effect on the reliability of information released by PopData and HDRN Canada. The release of erroneous or misleading information may have implications that affect the network, the research community, partners, stakeholders and public bodies.

Work must often meet tight deadlines and requires the incumbent to perform effectively under pressure. The incumbent will be expected to respond well to unexpected circumstances and exercise independent sound judgment. The incumbent must demonstrate exceptional public relations and interpersonal skills. Failure to meet deliverables by specified deadlines will have consequences for funded projects and relationships with PopData and HDRN Canada partners.
