The Behavioural Support Personal Support Worker reports to the Director of Care and in collaboration with the Director of Care and the Behavioural Support Manager/Lead. The role involves supporting residents, staff, and family members in the management of responsive behaviours and/or expressions of feelings in the comfort of the long-term care setting.

**Responsibilities:**

  • Provide person-centered care on the resident home area (RHA) as per RHM's policies and accountability framework.
  • Support residents/families by communicating with them using person-centered language and engaging them in the provision of their own care whenever possible to support meaningful connections and a quality lived experience in the home.
  • Participate in all aspects of personal resident care to ensure the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of each resident/family are met under the direction of the BSO Manager/Lead and/or Director of Care.
  • Utilise therapeutic person-centered communication by establishing a meaningful connection with resident/families and co-workers for the purpose of meeting and surpassing the resident's needs, ensuring dignity and respect, in care at all times and celebrating the individuality of each resident and staff member.
  • Deliver effective and efficient resident-focused care that promotes resident/family choices, promotes unique cultures and traditions of the residents and acknowledges the resident's strength, areas for additional support as well as their need for safety and acceptance.
  • Participate with other team members in formulating, delivering, and reporting the daily resident care needs and preferences as per the individual's person-centered plan of care and plan for the day.
  • Provide 1 to 1 care as needed to support safe focused care, constant monitoring, completion behaviour DOS charting and assist with identification of triggers for responsive behaviours and/or expressions of feelings.
  • Implement behaviour care plans, and external resource recommendations as directed and mentor/coach staff in the care plan activity hand over process.
  • Provide 1 to 1 support for newly admitted residents with new or emerging responsive behaviours and also support reintegration of residents after psychiatric leave or long stay on an external behavioural unit.
  • Participate and collaborate on behaviour rounds with internal and external resources to contribute to development of person-centered care planning.
  • Assist with contribution of person-centered interventions on the care plan to minimize responsive behaviours and promote daily living skills and tasks that spark joy to the residents and their family members.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement of the RHA and associated care services.
  • Participate in mandatory education/training in-services for skill development and updates on new and/or relevant information on best practices.
  • Participate in additional training such as U-First training, GPA training, PIECES training, Montessori Approach, Dementiability, QUIS Training and any other behaviour support training skills that will improve the quality of care and lived experience of residents who live with Dementia and/or mental health issues.

**Qualifications:**

  • Current Personal Support Worker Certificate from a recognized institute.
  • Experience with working with residents with behaviours/formal training (GPA/PIECES) an asset.
  • Completion of six-hundred and forty (640) hours in PSW curriculum.
  • Minimum 1-year experience in a Long-Term Care setting an asset.
  • Knowledge of Ministry of Long-Term Care- Fixing Long Term Care Act and Regulations.
  • Ability to work well with others in a team approach and adapt to changing situations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary stressful environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills and computer literacy.
  • Ability to work with diverse clients.
  • Valid First Aid & CPR Certification.
  • Must be available to work weekends and statutory holidays.
  • To show evidence of being focused on people's feelings when interacting and knowing how to turn a task into positive social interaction.
  • To undertake and meet all legal requirements within a context of promoting individuals' rights and measuring/reducing elements of risk.
  • Must provide a complete and current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one.
  • As a condition of employment, candidates are required to submit documented results of TB testing (within the last six months or within 14 days upon hire) or a chest X-ray (within the last year), as per Public Health requirements.
  • Two supervisory references required.
  • COVID-19 vaccination is a condition of employment.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written second language is preferred.
