Job Description

The Assistant Controller plays a vital role in the financial operations of the rail transportation company, supporting the Financial and Corporate Controllers in managing accounting functions, financial reporting, budgeting, and analysis. This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail and contribute to the strategic financial planning of Cando Rail & Terminals

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and other regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial reports for management, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies.
  • Review monthly financial results in collaboration with operations teams and finance department

Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Assist in the development of annual budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis.
  • Support strategic planning and financial modeling efforts.

Accounting Operations

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of financial transactions.
  • Maintain and improve internal controls over financial reporting.

Audit and Compliance

  • Coordinate with external auditors and prepare necessary documentation for annual audits.
  • Ensure compliance with tax regulations and other legal requirements.
  • Implement and monitor internal controls to safeguard company assets.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff.
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
  • Provide training and development opportunities for team members.

Systems and Process Improvement

  • Evaluate and improve financial systems and processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Implement new accounting software or systems as needed.
  • Stay updated with industry best practices and emerging technologies.

Special Projects

  • Assist with special financial projects as directed by the Controller.
  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives to support company growth and operational excellence.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy in work.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
