Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Supervisor Laboratory Operations for The Division of Life Sciences department within the School of Arts & Sciences. The Supervisor Laboratory Operations position incorporates independence, decision-making, and safety and policy enforcement. In particular, this position needs knowledge and experience in techniques related to DNA sequencing (PCR, electrophoresis, and sequence analysis) and the ability to effectively communicate with undergraduate and graduate students to provide laboratory expertise as part of a supportive instructional environment. Under broad supervision of the Supervisor to Laboratory Instructional Support, this position will work autonomously to prioritize material preparation responsibilities to ensure that teaching laboratories are adequately prepared for instruction.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Attends weekly preparatory sessions.
  • Configures equipment and supplies for weekly lab activities.
  • Prepares chemicals, materials, and solutions for lab exercises.
  • Completes quality control testing on equipment and materials prior to the weekly preparatory session.
  • Collaborates with Teaching Assistants and the Supervisory LOC to monitor student research project progress, ensuring that necessary materials and supplies are available, and material and equipment concerns are resolved in a timely manner.
  • Provides guidance of chemical compatibility and safety procedures to help students successfully complete important research projects within the course’s time constraints.
  • Handles concerns independently such as student health, behavior, and facility crises. In the event of a building emergency, determine how to implement safety procedures.
  • Makes final decisions on how to enforce REHS safety standards and course policies to provide students with a safe and inclusive learning environment.
  • Troubleshoots technology issues to ensure that instructional time is not compromised.
  • Advises and instructs TAs on proper lab procedures and equipment use, allowing for continuity of instruction throughout the lab course.
  • Assists Supervisor with the receipt, storage, and disbursement of supplies and equipment as directed.
  • Conducts quality control on all lab equipment to prolong its durability.
  • Maintains and fixes laboratory equipment used for instruction.
Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a science curriculum.
  • Two years relevant experience as a technician/lab coordinator.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be responsible and have excellent communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to implement and enforce laboratory safety protocols and other policies.
  • Applicant must have a working knowledge of scientific research design and laboratory techniques in biology, specifically conducting and analyzing Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and electrophoresis and preparing DNA samples for sequencing.
  • Strong math skills for calculating concentrations and dilutions of samples and reagents, including basic chemistry skills like pipetting, needed to independently prepare reagents needed in laboratory activities in a timely fashion.
  • Proficient in understanding and executing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in the biology laboratory.
  • Basic computer and effective writing skills required for generating laboratory exercise protocols for teaching assistants and students and disseminating information to faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and students (word processing, spreadsheet, graphics program, and common LMS).
  • Ability to follow instructions from superiors and ask for clarification when needed.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, work both independently and in a team, and carry out multiple concurrent tasks, often with many interruptions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a professional relationship with faculty, Supervisory LOC, other staff, teaching assistants, and undergraduate students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting a college-level teaching laboratory.
  • Experience with data analysis, use of pH probe and other sensors.
  • Experience extracting, purifying, and isolating DNA from bacteria, plant, and animal samples in a research laboratory.
  • Experience in inventory management and computing skills would be useful.
  • The ability to prepare, conduct, and analyze PCR, gel electrophoresis, and DNA sequencing results.
  • Experience with basic microbiology techniques is preferred.
  • Strong mathematics, algebra, and analytical skills for independent and correct calculations needed in preparation of reagents and dilutions.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Must be able to lift 55 lbs.
  • Requires standing/walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Special Conditions:

  • Amenable work schedule to ensure coverage for day and night classes throughout the semester based on a 37.5-hour work week as set forth by the Supervisor.
  • Will need to work evening during the Fall semester to ensure coverage of classes offered.
  • Will need to work during the summer to cover summer classes.
