Job Summary:
Reporting to the Chief Financial & Administrative Officer (CFAO), the Finance Manager plans, directs and coordinates all operational functions of the Finance department, including internal and external financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management. The Finance Manager oversees the maintenance of internal controls and ensures that monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements are prepared in accordance with Canadian Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS). The Finance Manager is also focused on the development of Finance staff by managing performance, setting goals, coaching, and upholding a high standard in all aspects of the department performance is an important part of this position.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
- Manage the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial and management reporting in a timely fashion
- Assist in the preparation and development of the annual budget in collaboration with other departments
- Monitor and review monthly reconciliations of key account balances
- Prepare and enter accounting postings and adjusting journal entries
- Prepare customer invoices and statements
- Ensure all applicable statutory and regulatory requirements are met, including tax compliance
- Submit expense claims and other required reporting to funders
- Liaise with external auditors to ensure the audit is handled efficiently and effectively
- Perform ad hoc financial analysis and reports as required
- Maintain adequate cashflow for daily activities
- Monitor and recommend improvements to the financial reporting process and internal controls
- Assist in the development of accounting policies, procedures, and guidelines
- Provide staff supervision, training and cross-training among team members
- Motivate, develop and manage the Finance team by setting goals, monitoring progress and performance, and providing feedback and support
- Cross-trained to act as support for other areas in Finance to cover for vacation or unplanned absences, including payroll
- Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree and CPA designation required
- Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, ASPNO or PSAS (preferred)
- A minimum of 5 years full cycle accounting experience, including reporting financials to management and external stakeholders
- Experience coordinating audit activities, managing reporting, budget development and analysis
- Experience working in a not-for-profit environment (preferred)
- Able to identify improvement opportunities and implement solutions
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Software
- Knowledge of QuickBooks Online (or other similar industry-standard accounting software) desirable
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills
- Confident and tactful. Able to collaborate with all areas and levels of the organization
- Demonstrates flexibility, initiative and resourcefulness
- Excellent organizational skills with proven ability to prioritize workload and meet tight deadlines
