Musqueam's cultural continuity is a foundational aspect of who Musqueam are as a people.

The Cultural Recognition Coordinator will work within the Intergovernmental Affairs Department, under the umbrella of the larger Title and Rights family (division).

The Cultural Heritage Recognition Coordinator is responsible for ensuring there is Musqueam recognition, cultural continuity and enhancement in projects as well as working with the project team to ensure Musqueam's culture and heritage are recognized through various avenues.

The Cultural Heritage Recognition Coordinator is responsible for collaboratively planning, developing, and helping review projects to ensure Musqueam's teachings and values gathered from stakeholders are relayed to proponents, ensuring that the project protects and honours Musqueam culture, traditions and values.

The Coordinator will also be responsible for working with proponents to develop various cultural recognition and enhancement programs and projects where required.

This will include liaising with other departments (Language and Culture, Archives, etc.) as well as with Knowledge Holders and community members.

This role will also take on other duties as required.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze incoming referrals, and identify key priorities and areas related to cultural and heritage recognition and enhancement, such as art installations, informational signage, cultural awareness training, and community engagement
  • Identify key team members within Musqueam and ensure that all information is received and disseminated and timelines are clearly indicated
  • Assist in developing capacity funding budgets and ensure agreements are in place if necessary, and that monies are received
  • Organize meetings, agendas, and meeting minutes
  • Work with the Intergovernmental Affairs team and other departments to develop projectspecific cultural recognition and enhancement programs
  • Liaise with the proponent about project details and opportunities for cultural recognition and enhancement
  • Work with internal staff from various departments to develop projectspecific cultural recognition, cultural awareness training and enhancement programs
  • Work with Knowledge Holders and other community members to ensure incorporation of cultural knowledge and direction into any cultural recognition and enhancement programs
  • Establish and maintain positive communication and relationships within Musqueam Indian Band, other government departments, various organizations, and First Nation partners to ensure interests and expectations of these groups are identified and responded to
  • Participate in projects as required must possess an ability to manage projects which include, but are not limited to: coordinating resources, ensuring appropriate consultation, and ongoing and final reporting where required
  • Participate in submeetings related to large projects in order to coordinate information for multiple departments across the organization. Follow up, develop responses, collect, and disseminate information. Participate in meetings, conferences, and regional sessions, and internal and external committees as directed
  • At the request of the Manager, or at own discretion, prepare and/or coordinate the preparation of:
  • Correspondence for management, Title and Rights Committee, and/or Chief and Council
  • Briefing materials for Chief and Council, Committees of Council (Title and Rights Committee), working groups, and senior management. This material may include researching issues and ensuring prepared responses are consistent with Musqueam Indian Band policy and strategic direction
  • Assist with community outreach and engagement sessions, including preparing presentation materials and newsletters
  • Maintain records in accordance with MIB's file plan
  • Development of Heritage Planning resources and guides
  • Other related tasks as required
Qualification and Skills

  • Skill and knowledge usually attained by successful completion of a postsecondary degree in museology or experience in the heritage sector or minimum of three years' experience in a closely related field or equivalent combination of training and experience working with or for a First Nation.
  • Cultural competency and knowledge of Musqueam culture and interests is an asset
  • Knowledge of the Musqueam Indian Band and/or experience working with First Nations is preferred; knowledge of the Musqueam Indian Band's government structure/business processes is an asset
  • Successful criminal record check
